– Stellar – Selective Tape-laying for Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Optimised Multi-Material Components Selective Tape-Laying for Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Optimised Multi-Material Components This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no

– Stellar – Selective Tape-laying for Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Optimised Multi-Material Components Stellar – Presentation Overview Background Project Aim General Information Consortium Partners Contact Information

– Stellar – Selective Tape-laying for Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Optimised Multi-Material Components Background Composite components are typically manufactured from a single reinforcement type (e.g. carbon or glass) Fibre architecture is often designed to give similar properties in each direction (woven or quasi- isotropic layups). Structures are not fully optimised and the component cost is higher than necessary.

– Stellar – Selective Tape-laying for Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Optimised Multi-Material Components Aim of the Project “To develop the manufacturing process for high- speed placement of carbon, glass and polymer fibre reinforced matrices, in selected locations in a composite structure, to provide the optimum reinforcement, weight and cost profile within a part.”

– Stellar – Selective Tape-laying for Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Optimised Multi-Material Components Project Focus The project will focus on the development of the Automated Tape Laying (ATL) process to selectively place reinforced thermoplastic tapes. Three manufacturing routes will be developed: Selective reinforcement of existing components Direct additive manufacture of components Manufacture of selectively reinforced tailored blanks for compression moulding

– Stellar – Selective Tape-laying for Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Optimised Multi-Material Components Automated Tape Laying Process Laser assisted tape laying head Carbon-fibre reinforced thermoplastic tape

– Stellar – Selective Tape-laying for Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Optimised Multi-Material Components Impact Knowledge, innovative process techniques and numerical models needed to design and manufacture optimised components using selectively placed reinforcement. This new process route will enable advanced and multi-material components to be used in new applications that will benefit from the weight and performance advantages.

– Stellar – Selective Tape-laying for Cost-Effective Manufacturing of Optimised Multi-Material Components Expected Benefits Utilisation of advanced materials in products with improved performance without a cost increase. Decrease in raw materials and energy consumption by at least 20%. Reduction of waste and emissions by at least 30%.
