* Questions  Functional Maths Questions – marks gained for explanation of the answer.  It’s important pupils answer …Yes/ no with a reason e.g. they are 50p short to get full marks

Essential Skills  Recall their times tables  Know methods to be able to perform calculations involving multiplication & division  50% of their final mark is gained on a non-calculator paper so it’s paramount they can perform these skills

GCSE ENGLISH PARENT SEMINAR

Overview of Year 11  In Year 11 students study either a combined English Language and Literature course which awards two GCSE grades or English only which offers one GCSE.  For both English Language and English only, 40% of the course consists of controlled assessments completed in school under exam conditions.

Controlled assessments Language – 40% 1. Spoken language – exploration of how we use and adapt language Novel – To Kill a Mockingbird or Of Mice and Men – Creative Creative 2 5. Literature – Shakespeare play and poems - 40 English only- 40% 1. Shakespeare – Romeo and Juliet 2. Novel- Of Mice and Men 3. Poetry – comparison of 2 poems 4. Descriptive creative – place, season 5. Narrative creative -story

Unit 1 exam  60% of the course is assessed in a 2 hour 15 minute Unit 1 exam.  Section A of the exam assesses reading skills.  Section B assesses writing skills.  The exam is tiered—Higher (grades A*-D) and Foundation (grades C– F). Your child will be notified for which tier they are entered.  In the course of Year 11 students will sit 3 mock exams and receive diagnostic feedback on areas of the exam that they need to develop and strengthen.

Literature  For Literature there is only one controlled assessment that constitutes 25% of the final grade. There are 2 GCSE exams.  Unit 2 assesses poetry. Students study an Anthology of 15 poems.  Unit 1 assesses students response to a novel (Of Mice and Men or To Kill A Mockingbird) and a modern drama (An Inspector Calls or The Crucible)  Unit 1 and 2 exams represent 75% of the grade.

Support Students should be encouraged to access:  Clinics- February half-term, Easter and Whitsun holidays.  Period 7 ( pm).  One-to-one sessions where appropriate.  Intervention classes.  Revision classes.  Complete homework.  Discuss books and set texts with them if you are familiar with the books.  Most texts have revision guides to support learning but students can create their own guides—booklets, cards and mind-maps. These could be displayed in bedrooms in the run-up to the exams.
