True cost of waste –Visible costs –Wasted materials –Labour costs –Transport costs True cost of waste ~£1,300 per skip Cost reduction
Savings of £28 per tonne by segregating waste on site – rising to £57 per tonne Material wasted in building 190,000 homes = £1 billion Current best practice could save ~£1,000 per house Cost reduction through waste reduction and recovery
Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) 1.Calculate the benefits of achieving good practice using the Net Waste Tool: Reduced cost of materials purchased Reduced cost of waste disposal 2.Investigate the cost of achieving good practice (targeted materials): Quality SWMP, materials storage, site training, management time, updating SWMP) 3.Calculate net benefit Benefit – Cost = Net benefit These savings currently do not include : demolition and excavation materials infrastructure and maintenance projects cost savings from reuse of materials waste reduction from selection of alternative structural solutions at the design stage.

Masonry House CBA – net benefit
CBA project comparison * preliminary results only
CBA conclusions Reducing and segregating waste provides a net cost benefit (most cases) Projects with very low waste generation (e.g. prison) can still achieve cost neutral good practice waste management The cost of good practice is a greater % of construction value for small projects The greater benefit is achieved through waste reduction - segregation is not enough
