Turkey is a country in both Europe and Asia. The area of Turkey is about 780,000 square kilometres. Its population is about 71 million. Turkey's official language is Turkish.Turkey is a republic. There are 81 provinces in Turkey. Currency of Turkey is Turkish Lira. The capital city is Ankara, a city in the central Anatolia. The cultural and economic center is Istanbul. In the past Istanbul was known as Constantinople. Turkey was founded in 1923 by Ataturk after the war of independence. Before that, the Turkish Republic was part of the Ottoman Empire. Atatürk made many changes that made Turkey more modern. These days, Turkey is a popular place for tourists to visit. It has hundreds of kilometres of beautiful beaches on its Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, and many important historical places.

ANKARA Ankara is the capital city of Turkey. It is located in the center of Anatolia. Ankara is the second largest city after Istanbul. The city has a population of about 4,5 million.

Not only was he a successful military commander, but he established a democratic constitution and put in place reforms that set Turkey on the road to becoming a modern, developed nation.

TURKISH DELIGHT Turkish Delight is a confection made from starch and sugar. It is often flavored with rosewater, mastic or lemon; rosewater gives it a characteristic pale pink color. It has a soft, jelly-like and sometimes sticky consistency, and is often packaged and eaten in small cubes dusted with icing sugar or copra to prevent clinging. Some types contain small nut pieces.

KEBAB Kebab means "grilled (or broiled) meat" in Turkish. Kebab is usually made of lamb and beef. Sometimes chicken and fish are used for some styles. There are many varieties of kebab and the term means different things in different countries. The generic term kebab usually refers to doner kebab and to shish kebab.

GLAZE A Glaze is a type of paint used on pottery or ceramics. This special paint contains glass that melts and hardens when the pottery is fried in a kiln. KİLİMS Kilims are flat woven carpets or rugs produced in Turkey. Kilims can be decorative.

HACİVAT & KARAGÖZ Karagöz and Hacivat are the lead characters of the traditional Turkish shadow play, popularized during the Ottoman period. The central theme of the plays are the contrasting interaction between the two main characters: Karagöz represents the illiterate but straightforward public, whereas Hacivat belongs to the educated class, speaking Ottoman Turkish and using a poetical and literary language. Karagöz's native wit always gets the better of Hacivat.
