Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom in the north-east of the island of Ireland. It is variously described as a country, province or region of the UK, amongst other terms.

The region that is now Northern Ireland was the bedrock of the Irish war of resistance against English programmes of colonialism in the late 16th century.

During the 19th century, legal reforms started in the late 18th century removed statutory discrimination against Catholics and progressive programmes enabled tenant farmers to buy land from landlords.

Economy The Northern Ireland economy is the smallest of the four economies making up the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland has traditionally had an industrial economy, most notably in shipbuilding, rope manufacture and textiles.

Transport Northern Ireland is served by three airports. Major sea ports at Larne and Belfast carry passengers and freight between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Since 1998, Northern Ireland has devolved government within the United Kingdom. The UK Government and UK Parliament are responsible for reserved and excepted matters. Reserved matters are a list of policy area.

Northern Ireland was covered by an ice sheet for most of the last ice age and on numerous previous occasions.

Northern Ireland consists of six historic counties: County Antrim, County Armagh, County Down, County Fermanagh, County Londonderry, County Tyrone.

English is spoken as a first language by almost all of the Northern Ireland population. It is the de facto official language.

Culture With its improved international reputation, Northern Ireland has recently witnessed rising numbers of tourists. Attractions include cultural festivals, musical and artistic traditions.

Education Unlike most areas of the United Kingdom, in the last year of primary school many children sit entrance examinations for grammar schools. The two main universities in Northern Ireland are The Queen's University of Belfast, and the University of Ulster.
