MOON PHASES POWERPOINT

The sequence of day and night is caused by the rotation of the Earth on its axis. The axis is an imaginary line

It takes the Earth 24 hours to complete one rotation on its axis. 24 hours = 1 day on Earth.

As the Earth rotates (turns), the side of the Earth toward the sun has day while the part not facing the sun has night

If it’s daytime on our side of the world, it’s nighttime on the opposite side of the world.

The Earth completes 1 rotation on its axis every 24 hours.

Questions… 1)Why is it nighttime on one side of the Earth while it is daytime on the other side? 2)How long does it take the Earth to turn (rotate)? 3)What is the Earth’s axis?

Earth’s rotation The Earth rotates on its axis (imaginary vertical line around which Earth spins) every 23 hours & 56 minutes. One day on Earth is one rotation of the Earth. Day on Earth is when our side of the Earth faces the sun. Night on Earth is when the side of Earth we are on faces away from the sun.

Why do we have seasons?

Seasons are the result of the tilt of the Earth's axis. Earth’s axis is tilted 23.5°. This tilting is why we have SEASONS like fall, winter, spring, summer. The number of daylight hours is greater for the hemisphere, or half of Earth, that is tilted toward the Sun.

Why do we have seasons? Summer is warmer than winter (in each hemisphere) because the Sun's rays hit the Earth at a more direct angle during summer than during winter

Why do we have seasons? Also the days are much longer than the nights during the summer. During the winter, the Sun's rays hit the Earth at an extreme angle, and the days are very short. These effects are due to the tilt of the Earth's axis.

Seasons…in a nut shell

The seasons are the result of the tilt of the Earth's axis. And the REVOLUTION (ORBIT)OF THE EARTH AROUND THE SUN I know this is a repeat, but it is important that you understand this idea. Many Americans, including Harvard graduates, do not know what causes seasons!

Review Look closely at where the Sun is hitting the Earth during each season:

During part of the year the North Pole tilts towards the sun. This season is ________.

During another part of the year, the North Pole points away from the sun. This season is ______.

Phases of the Moon Created by Mrs. Bodine-Donahue

28 Preliminary Topics Before students can understand the reason for phases, they need to understand: The Moon orbits the Earth The Moon orbit at an angle with respect to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun The Moon doesn’t shine on its own; it reflects sunlight The scale of the Moon and Earth’s sizes and distance Ecliptic plane Moon’s orbital plane

Why does the moon have phases? The revolution of the Moon around the Earth causes the Moon to appear to have phases. NSF North Mississippi GK-8

The lunar month is the 29.5 days it takes to go from one new moon to the next. During the lunar month, the Moon goes through all its phases.

Lunar Cycle: TEKS 8.7B What causes TIDES?

There are two high tides and two low tides each day. Tides are caused by the pull of both the sun and the moon on the Earth. Changes in the positions of the Earth, sun, and moon affect the height of the tides throughout the month. But why, some say, the moon?… And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain? John F. Kennedy Jr.

55 Tides The Moon’s gravity tugs on the Earth. – It pulls the most on the part of Earth closest, which raises the atmosphere, the oceans, and even the rocks (a little) – It pulls the least on the part of Earth that’s farthest, which allows the oceans and atmosphere to be further from the Moon (and higher) – The Sun’s gravity does the same thing, but to a lesser extent

56 Tides and the Moon

Caused when the earth, moon, and sun are in a straight line The combination of the gravitational pull of the sun and moon cause the ocean of the Earth to Bulge. Spring tides occur during new and full moons. Spring tides have the greatest range between high and low tides. Really high, high tides and really low, low tides. Named from an Old English term meaning to jump -- NOT FROM THE SEASON That's our new frontier out there, and it's everybody's business to know about space. Christa McAuliffe

When the earth, moon, and sun are at a right angle Occur during first and third quarter moons. Produce the least range between high and low tide. For a dreamer is one who can find his way by moonlight, and see the dawn before the rest of the world. - Oscar Wilde

Lunar Cycle: TEKS 8.7B

1. At which position would the moon be during a neap tide? A 1 B 2 C 3 D 4 Chapter 14

2. At which position would the moon be during a spring tide? F 1 G 2 H 3 I 4 Chapter 14

3. The tidal range would be greater when the moon is at position 3 than when the moon is at position 4 because Chapter 14 A position 4 forms a 90° angle with the sun and the Earth. B position 3 is very near a neap-tide position. C position 3 is very near a spring-tide position. D position 4 is very near a spring-tide position.
