NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory Obsolescence Driven Avionics Redesign (ODAR) Status POIWG #31, January 2012 Justin Bailey Data Management Coordinator (DMC) MSFC/EO Approved for Public Release; Distribution Unlimited

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 2 Completed Tasks  SGANT-2 installed on 2J/A  Redundant Ku receiver  APS install occurred September 2 nd  No issues at activation  Minor sync issues have been discovered in 4 months of operations  Mod Kits launched on ULF-7 which include cables for ODAR

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 3 Upcoming Changes  Video After ICU Install  The ICU install is going to change video distribution to all users  The extent of the change is currently being worked out  A more complete story will be put together at the next POIWG  DFP Viewer  Due to the complexity of the planning system, DMCs will be moving to a software based DFP  If users are currently using a paper DFP, the DMC team is looking to phase that out  Non-ODAR Change  New HD camera system being developed and will be deployed at TBD  LAN-based encoders (OCA)  The ops concept for this system has not been developed yet

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 4 ODAR Schedule  All following dates are NET  March 2012 – APS v6.2 software load  April 2012 – Recable activities begin (Prep work for ICU install)  June 2012 – 2 iPEHG and 1 ICU Launch on HTV-3  Late Summer 2012 – iPEHG Installation (US LAB Only)  August 2012 – ICU Activation  TBD 2012 – 2 iPEHGs launch  TBD – iPEHG-A Installation  TBD – APS v6.3 software load (CCS R12)

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 6 Current Data System Constraints  8 HRDL Channels  7 reserved for specific users  1 shared by IPU, MPC, CIR, etc.  150 Mbps Ku Band Downlink  Mbps reserved for specific users  26.5 Mbps shared by shared HRDL users, higher quality video, higher data rate COL HRM and AMS  8 Mbps PEHG Gateway Limit  Scheduling a second PEHG-GW requires a HRDL channel

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 7 Current Onboard Data and Video System APS1APS2 VTR Rack/ Location Rack/ Location PEHG1 US ER US ER PLMDM HRFM HCOR PEHGs are 10Mbps PEHG2 SGTRC SGANT VBSP PEHGA N2 ER N2 ER LEHX VSU VBSP digitizes video signals HRFM muxes digital data and digitized video from VBSP 12 inputs into 1 stream HCOR records and/or passes data through to HRFM. It can also packetize bitstream data. APS only routes signals HRM JAXA’s upgrade to PEHG-J

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 8 Phase 1 ODAR enhancements to Onboard Data and Video System New or Modified ORUs:  Modify the Automated Payload Switch (APS)  Replace:  Controller and Switch Card  Replace the power supply  Improvements:  Aggregation of multiple input data streams into a single output data stream – eliminating the 8 channel HRDL bottleneck.  Provide increased Health and Status from the ORU, including actual measured data rates from each input  Provide Dark Fiber Detection  Automatically disconnects any routes that have a dark fiber condition caused by an upstream source Tx shutdown

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 9 Phase 1 ODAR enhancements to Onboard Data and Video System iAPS Install  On-orbit installation to be performed late August 2011, possible slip to late Sept 2011  Plan is to leave one APS powered for Ku downlink while the other is upgraded  This will cut the number of available HRDL channels down to Four (4) during the crew upgrade operations  No plan as of yet which APS will be first  Will assess per APS usage just prior to work in order to minimize the impacts to operations  Newly installed iAPS will go through initialization and checkout  Will be operating in a mixed fleet mode during this time  We will hold this configuration for a short time (worst case is “days”)  At the end of the checkout, any necessary swaps will occur (PLMDM, PEHG) to configure to the iAPS and the other APS will be removed and upgraded  More than Four (4) downlinks will be available during this time as the iAPS will be capable of muxing inputs

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 10 Post-iAPS Installation Data System Constraints  150 Mbps Ku Band Downlink  Mbps reserved for specific users  26.5 Mbps shared by shared HRDL users, higher quality video, higher data rate COL HRM and AMS  Constraint relieved with installation of the ICU in July 2012 – 300 Mbps Ku Band downlink  8 Mbps PEHG Gateway Limit  Scheduling a second PEHG-GW requires a HRDL channel  Constraint relieved with installation of iPEHGs in Nov 2011 – 100 Mbps gateway

Performs packetization of bitstreams. HRM

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 12 Additional ODAR enhancements New or Modified ORUs:  Replace the Payload Ethernet Hub Gateway (PEHG) with a 100BaseT Ethernet switch – eliminating the 8 Mbps MRDL bottleneck  Replace the following ORUs with the Integrated Communications Unit (ICU) –Video Baseband Signal Processor (VBSP) –High-rate Communications Outage Recorder (HCOR) –High Rate Frame Multiplexer (HRFM) –High Rate Modem (HRM) –Ku-Band Forward Link Receiver –Video Tape Recorders (VTRs) –OCA Router

NASA MSFC Mission Operations Laboratory MSFC Page 13 Additional ODAR enhancements ICU Capabilities:  Provide the applicable functional capabilities of the ORUs it replaces  Support 300 Mbps and 25 Mbps data rates on the return and forward links, respectively  Provide interfaces to the audio system for audio embedded in digital video encoding and two-way audio communications  Provide up to 8 hours of video recording (digital)  Provide simultaneous record and playback  Support operations in a contingency critical command, audio, and telemetry mode  Provide multiple user access to the Ku-band forward link
