Important Words to Know Fraction: a number that names a part of a whole, a part of a collection or a part of a region. EX: ½ Numerator: the number above the bar in a fraction. EX: In the fraction ½, 1 is the numerator Denominator: the number below the bar in a fraction. EX: in the fraction ½, 2 is the denominator Improper Fraction: a fraction where the numerator is larger than the denominator. Mixed Number: A fraction that contains a whole number part and a fraction part/

Adding Fractions WITH Common Denominators When you are adding or subtracting fractions that have common denominators (the denominators are the same), you can add or subtract across. You will keep the denominator! EX:
