*MCKINNEY-VENTO* The McKinney-Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures immediate enrollment and educational stability for homeless children and youth. McKinney-Vento provides federal funding to states for the purpose of supporting district programs that serve homeless students.

*MCKINNEY-VENTO* Identified students are supported in their building by their school counselors and guaranteed access to food and transportation to remove any barriers to their education. Community partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club, Clallam County Housing Resources (CCHR), the Food Bank, and many service groups have been created to provide wrap-around service for eligible families. Meeting the needs of eligible kids takes significant coordination of services. An example of this kind of sensitive and critical work is as follows: LSS, building staff and the transportation team have worked together on providing consistent transportation for our students currently sheltered in Port Angeles through CCHR. We have established van service to transport children to and from school everyday; these children have had increased attendance and success in school as a result of this service.

SECTION 504 Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights law which prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. It applies to any school which receives federal funds. The intent of this law is to provide students with disabilities equal access to educational programs, services, and activities. Students with disabilities may not be denied participation in school programs and activities solely on the basis of disability. Accommodations are program adjustments made to remove disability-related barriers so a student is able to fully participate in school- both academic and nonacademic activities.

HEALTH SERVICES Health Services provides consultation to school administrators, staff, families, and students in order to reduce barriers to learning and better assure a safe and healthy school environment.

TITLE VII:INDIAN EDUCATION It is the purpose of this regulation to support the efforts of local educational agencies, Indian tribes and organizations, postsecondary institutions, and other entities to meet the unique educational and culturally related academic needs of American Indian and Alaska Native students, so that such students can meet the same challenging State student academic achievement standards as all other students are expected to meet.

LEARNING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM LAP programs serve eligible students who need academic support for reading, writing or math, or who need readiness skills to learn these core subjects. With special emphasis on reading literacy in the early grades, schools use their state LAP funds to deliver supplemental services that give these students the strong start they need for academic success.

TITLE I, PART A Title I, Part A is a federal program that serves the unique needs of children — kindergarten to grade 12 — who struggle to learn. Title I programs and services provide customized instruction and curricula that helps students meet academic standards and take an active, engaged interest in what they learn and can do. As the oldest and largest federal education program, Title I programs build equity of opportunity for children whose struggles often keep them on the academic sidelines.

SPECIAL EDUCATION The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law ensuring services to children with disabilities. IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education and related services to more than 6.5 million eligible infants, toddlers, children and youth with disabilities. In exchange for federal money, schools must guarantee that all children with disabilities will receive a “free, appropriate public education.”

Its mission — English language learners (ELL) meet state standards and develop language proficiency in an environment where language and cultural assets are recognized as valuable resources for learning.

*TRANSITIONAL BILINGUAL INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM* Big news this school year includes making the transition from the paper-and-pencil to the much improved computerized ELPA21 (English Language Proficiency Assessment for the 21st Century). Looking forward to getting the results in August! A unique professional development opportunity this year was to meet and collaborate with the Port Angeles ELL teacher. Further progress has been made on implementing the "new" ELD (English Language Development) standards.
