The objectives of today’s w/shop are:  Analyze the Enquiry standards.  Identify and apply the enquiry skills to parts of the lessons. 3

Brain teasers 4

 The Right Brain vs Left Brain test... do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?  If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa. Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it. RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS

 The Enquiry standards in Science include the abilities (Skills / competencies) necessary to do scientific enquiry  معايير التحقيق في العلوم وتشمل قدرات ( المهارات / الكفاءات ) الضرورية للقيام البحث العلمي 8

Consider standards 1.1 grades (7-9), 1.1 and 1.2 of 10Adv, write the five most important enquiry skills that the students must have to fulfill these standards… 9

Standard 1.1 grades (7-9)  Plan investigations, controlling variables and collecting an appropriate range of evidence, using appropriate techniques to ensure accuracy, identify patterns in observations and data, draw generalised conclusions and test predictions.

Standards 1.1 grade (10Adv)  Identify and develop a clearly focused research question. Standards 1.2 grade (10Adv)  Make predictions directly related to a research question. 11

 Formulate a Focused Question صياغة السؤال  Distinguish between Facts and Opinions التمييز بين الحقائق والآراء  Make Predictions تنبؤات  Make observations تقديم ملاحظات  Draw conclusions استنتاجات  Collect an appropriate range of evidence جمع مجموعة مناسبة من الأدلة 12

 What is a good enquiry question? Brainstorming What makes a question a good enquiry question?  H/O

14 What is a good Inquiry question? Part 1 HO/10

1. Most importantly...something you are interested in. 2. The question is open to research. This means you should be able to find some answers to the question by doing research. 3. You don't already know the answer. 4. The question may have multiple possible answers. - The question should not be answered by a simple yes/no. - "why" is better than "what“ 15

5. It has a clear focus. Your final question should be as direct and specific as possible 6. Try to avoid or rephrase questions which have a premise. 7. Make sure you have defined all the terms in your question so you know exactly what you are asking. 8. A new question can be asked once all your information is gathered.

17

 A fact is something that is true or can be proven. الحقيقة هي شيء صحيح أو يمكن أن يكون ثبت  An opinion is your feelings or how someone else feels about a particular topic.

 USE INFORMATION YOU ALREADY KNOW AND WHAT THE AUTHOR IS TELLING YOU TO MAKE A PREDICTION. A PREDICTION IS WHAT YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN. H/O 12 19
