Early Years Born: May 22, 1844 Died: June 14, 1922 Born near Pittsburgh, PA into a wealthy, upper-class family Traveled extensively throughout Europe Studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia

Early Art Career Moved to Paris in 1866 (despite her father’s objections) to study art Was not allowed to go to art school in Paris so she studied privately Went to the Louvre Museum in Paris to paint copies of famous paintings During this time she painted in a traditional style of the “Great Masters”

Middle Years 1870—moved back to the US to live with her family in Pennsylvania No financial support from family and was not able to sell paintings Wanted to return to Europe and did so after painting copies of Italian paintings (and earning money) at request of Bishop of PIttsburgh

Middle Years 1871-returns to Europe and eventually settles in France by 1874 At first, cannot get paintings accepted into Paris Salon for viewing and selling 1877-Edgar Degas invites her to show her work with “Impressionists” Cassat admired Degas and he taught her a great deal 1879—Cassat has a successful show with the Impressionists in Paris

Artistic Style Used pastels Often showed mothers and their children as her subjects Used copper engraving Became adviser to wealthy art collectors about which Impressionists to buy 1890s were a very artistically productive time for her Became very ill in her later years and died near Paris.
