Our healthy eating changes Our healthy School Food of Conduct. By School Council members.

We had an assembly and this was about being healthy. We looked at a packed lunch that had a chocolate mouse, packet of crisps, meat pie, fizzy drink and a ham sandwich on white bread. There was also a shopping bag that the teacher brought with them. Inside was fruit, brown bread, water, milk, yoghurt, cheese, egg, ham. We played a game at making the teachers packed lunch healthy. This was fun swapping the food around. In the end the teacher was pleased that we had a lot of good foods in the box. At the end of the assembly we were set a challenge to create a healthy packed lunch using a paper plate. We could collage, paint, draw or stick is was up to us. The competition ran for a week and we the School Council got to choose two winners in each class. They won a pencil box and coloured pencils.

Although we had had an assembly and a healthy school theme day. We still didn’t have great packed lunches. We had another meeting with our Learning Mentor and said that we were worried that not everyone was eating a healthy packed lunch. So we mentioned it at another assembly time. We looked at the food plate with all its colours on and chatted about what we should be eating. We asked our classes if they could come up with rules for our mums and dads. We sat together with our Learning Mentor and we wrote our Food Code of Conduct.

It was fun and exciting making the ‘Food Code of Conduct’. We then got to show it to our classes and then talk to the school in assembly. We asked the dinner ladies and school Prefects to help us to check if the packed lunches were getting better. The teachers also looked at packed lunches. We sent our food code of conduct to all our parents on a newsletter and we asked it to go on the website. All our members went around school and we then stuck them in all our classes and on our notice board for parents. We have also had three more healthy days. In my class we got to make healthy snack pizza’s using vegetables and fish, and meat. They tasted great. I have made them at home as well.

We now have children going home and telling their mums and dads what they are allowed in their packed lunch. We have a competition as well every week. We can get a raffle ticket for ‘The Captain’s Table’ you get a raffle ticket from teachers, dinner ladies or Prefects for having a healthy packed lunch. They don’t do the same day every week and sometimes it is more than one day a week. This is fun because we sit at a very special table with table cloth, napkins, party hats, posh plates and there is extra food as treats for us to try. One problem we found was that we didn’t sit with our friends. After a few weeks the teacher who was organising it asked us what we felt and how we could make it better? We said not as many winners then we can choose our friends and this is what we are doing.

I like the Captain’s Table because I have school dinners and I can get a raffle ticket if I try something new or I show good table manners. I got to sit with my friend and we got some chopped vegetables all different colours and there was a scone also as a treat for our pudding. We have lots of assemblies about healthy eating and when we ask the children what they are doing they say they are helping to make their lunch. We think this is a good thing. One of my class said he had got cross when his mum wanted to give him crisps. He said it wasn’t healthy and he wouldn’t get a raffle ticket.

All our classes have tried lots of different foods and drinks and have made different foods on our theme days. We have also had a healthy heart day. A lady came from Heartbeat and she showed us why it is important to eat well. Samantha has made a powerpoint about our heart you can find it on the website. We are now with our journalist club writing class newsletters for parents. We have written about our Captains table and pictures of the children eating together. We sent these home for our parents and they are on our website for others to look at.

We have had fun sharing our ideas with the rest of school and the teachers. We are looking forward to our next theme day and our sponsored skip. We hope you like our power point about our healthy food code of conduct? Fulwood St. Peter’s School Council If you like the idea try it! We would like to pass this message on to other schools.
