Presentation transcript:

 The Ten Commandments - also known as the decalogue or ten words.  They are a list of moral standards by which we can base our lives on, revealed to Moses by God in the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy.  The exact numbering of the commandments is not certain as it is not in scripture (Catholics number differently from Protestants and Jews.) Exodus 20:1-7

Beatitudes – the word beatitude means “blessing” or “promise of true happiness”.  They were given as directions for life in biblical times (like in the book of Proverbs).

 The 8 Beatitudes (of Jesus) – these are different than the beatitudes of the Old Testament because they direct us along paths on which we would not normally expect to find happiness.  Format: Blessed are the...(virtuous people, usually marginalized in society), for...(their reward)  They can be found in Matthew 5:3-11

 Jesus’ beatitudes and the Ten Commandments lead us to the happiness of true and lasting friendship with others and with God.  The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes are the stepping stones that lead us to the kingdom of heaven. Jesus’ beatitudes lead us to the happiness of true and lasting friendship others and with God. The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes are the stepping stones that lead us to the kingdom of heaven.
