First Grade Math – Session 2 Geometry Mrs. Alter PARENT UNIVERSITY

Common Core State Standards Math Content Standards Organized by grade level math topic Guide instruction, serve as the curriculum Math Practice Standards Intended to develop “mathematical thinkers” These are interwoven in all lessons and all grades

Math Content Strands Operations and Algebraic Thinking Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Add and subtract within 20. Work with addition and subtraction equations. Number and Operations in Base Ten Extend the counting sequence. Understand place value. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. Measurement and Data Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units. Tell and write time. Represent and interpret data. Work with money. Geometry Reason with shapes and their attributes.

Standards For Math Practice Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Triangle Task: What do all of these triangles have in common? What is true for some but not all of the triangles? What makes them different from the figures that are not triangles?

Where Are We Now? Geometry Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g. triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g./ color, orientation, overall size)/ build and draw shapes that possess defining attributes. (1.G.1) What Does This Look Like? What makes a shape a shape?

Understand Composite Shapes

Where Are We Now? Geometry Compose two=dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape. (1.G.2) What Does this Look Like? What shape can you make with other shapes?

Vocabulary Defining Attributes: always present features that classify an object Non-defining attributes: features that may be present, but do not identify what a shape is called 2 dimensional: a shape that only has two-dimensions (flat) 3 dimensional: an object that has height, width and depth Composite shape: a figure made up of two or more geometric shapes
