PREVIEW OF The Crucible by Arthur Miller Prepare to be schooled by Ms. Hanzlick!!!!!!!!!

The Author Arthur Miller From NYC Very famous writer Most prolific during 1940s & 1950s Hollywood “in crowd” Married to Marilyn Monroe Author of The Crucible

The Context Response to McCarthy hearings – Miller felt like Senator McCarthy was treating suspected Communists (including many of Miller’s own friends in Hollywood) during the early 1950s in the same way that the Puritans treated suspected witches during the 1600s

The Setting Salem, Massachusetts 1692 “Witch Trials”

The Plot A group of girls goes dancing in the forest with a slave.

The Plot One of the girls (Betty) falls into a coma.

The Plot Rumors of witchcraft pervade the town.

The Plot Abigail, the ringleader, tells the girls not to admit the truth about what they’ve been doing.

The Plot BTW, Abigail is having an affair with a dude named John Proctor.

The Plot Eventually, the slave girl—in an effort to stay out of trouble—says the girls were possessed by demons and doing witchcraft the night they got caught dancing in the woods.

The Plot Abigail and Betty support the slave girl, and they all start accusing various townspeople of being witches.

The Plot John knows that Abigail is lying, and his wife (Elizabeth) tries to get him to tell the truth; he won’t, and eventually Abigail accuses Elizabeth of being a witch, and she is arrested.

The Plot During Elizabeth’s trial, John admits to his affair with Abigail and tries to convince the court that she made up the witch accusation out of jealousy.

The Plot When asked if her husband cheated, however, Elizabeth lies to protect his honor.

The Plot After this, all the girls (the one’s who were dancing in the woods at the beginning of the play) start freaking out, pretending they are possessed, and accusing John Proctor himself of being a witch.

The Plot That’s all I’m going to tell you for now. What do you think will happen to John?
