The Betrayal & “Arrest” John 18:1-14

The Period of Consummation The Betrayal and “Arrest” The Trials The Denial The Crucifixion The Resurrection

Henry The office of the priest was to teach and pray and offer sacrifice. Christ, after teaching and praying, applies Himself to make atonement. He had said all He had to say as a prophet. He now addresses Himself to His work as priest.

John 18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.

John 20:30-31 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

John 21:25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

Matthew 26:30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

John 18:2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.

Gualter The first Adam had everything that was pleasant in the Garden of Eden, and yet fell. The second Adam had everything that was painful and trying in the Garden of Gethsemane, but was a glorious conqueror.

Luke 22:39 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.

Luke 21:37 And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet.

John 18:3 So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

Matthew 26:47 While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people.

John 18:4-6 Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

John 18:7-8 So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.”

John 18:9 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.”

John 18:10-11 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

Luke 22:31-34 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” 34 Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

John 18:12-14 So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.

The Surrender I.…was Conscious II.…was Voluntary III.…was Vicarious IV.…was Loving

Psalm 41:9 Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.

Zechariah 11:13 Then the L ORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the lordly price at which I was priced by them. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the L ORD, to the potter.

John 8:58-59 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

Matthew 26:52-53 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?”

Calvin The Evangelist does not speak merely of their bodily life, but means that Christ, sparing them for a time, provided for their eternal salvation. Consider how great their weakness was. What do we think they would have done alone, if brought to the test? Christ did not choose they should be tried beyond the strength He had given, and rescued them from eternal destruction.

John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Booth The Jews said that they would believe in Him if He would come down from the cross. We believe in Him because He would not come down from the cross.

Luke 22:51 But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him.

Calvin It is exceedingly thoughtless in Peter to try to prove his faith by the sword, while he could not do so by his tongue.

Henry When the people would have forced Him to take a crown and wished to make Him a king, he withdrew and hid Himself (John 6:15). But when they came to force Him to His cross, He offered Himself. He came to this world to suffer, and went to the other world to reign.

1 Corinthians 10:12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
