Adjectives—modify/describe nouns and pronouns --answer the questions How many? How much? What kind? Which one? Ex: sweet candy, the blue sweater, the obnoxious student, chocolate cake, sixteen candles What kind of candy? Which sweater? Which student? What kind of cake? How many candles?

Adverbs—modify/describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs --answer the questions When? Where? Why? How? To what extent? Ex: He arrived late. We went home. Bobby ran slowly. The puppy is too cute. He was so very late. Arrived when? Went where? Ran how? How cute? Late to what extent?

Phrase—a group of words without a subject and verb that acts like one word
