Vega-Nor Art Criticism By Michael Rixom

Title: Vega-Nor Artist: Victor Vasarely 1969, Oil on canvas, 783/4 x 783/4 inches. Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, Gift of Seymour H. Knox, 1969

Description Squares Ball I see a ball hitting a piece of paper which has a drawing on it. I see many different squares that are going from bigger to smaller. I also see that there is four main sections and that the squares on the right side of the art work are filled in and ones on the left have a outline. The art work also has red in the top left and bottom right corners, and yellows in the top right and bottom left corners. The colors switch places with each other in the ball shape. Sections Color Movement

Analysis Victor Vasarely’s art work shows an optic illusion which demonstrates the principles of art. His art work shows Balance because every is equal and balanced on all sides, it also shows proportions because as the squares get farther away from the center they get smaller which completes the optic illusion. The emphasis of the art work is the center, so that your eye falls down the shape which makes the shape look rounded. This art work shows pattern because the entire artwork is layers of squares which get smaller as you progress down the shape. The art work also looks like there is a sphere popping out of the center which shows the movement of the art work. The art work shows variety by adding shapes and color together in the art work. This art work obviously represents color with the four main colors and then the blue and green. The artwork also represents value by having the colors get darker as they get to the bottom of the sphere, and it represents line by having all the straight squares in the art. The shapes are mostly squares but there is also the one sphere which shares with perspective by creating an optic illusion so it looks like the sphere is in front of the background. The art work also shows texture by having the squares look like they are sunk in on the inside.

Interpretation I believe that this art work represents happiness and suspense because their is a lot of bright colors that makes the atmosphere seem happy. It shows the suspension part because it feels like there is a ball about to come through the paper and hit you, like right before you hit a piñata. I believe that this artist created this piece of art to make a fun colorful piece of art that got the looker confused and make them think about the art work.

Evaluating I loved how the artist was able to create so many squares with all of the squares being straight. I also liked how the artist used a lot of color instead of making it just greys. I disliked how there was only one main sphere that popped out, and I wish the artist added more 3D shapes in the art work. I believe that in the end that the artist was successful because he was able to make the people who viewed his artwork think about it and he created a cool piece of art, which in my opinion is what the artist wanted to get with this piece of art.
