Presented by Dee Ryan How Web 2.0 facilitates independent learning

Web 2.0 & independent learning Students = tech savvy –Thrive in an environment where Web 2.0 tools are being used –Natural for them to log on & use these tools outside class hours Ability to engage learners in an interactive format –Learners are keen & motivated to add content to the class Ning / wiki both inside & outside class time –Opportunity to express views & communicate online Students engage in collective thought & shared ideas – physical distance is no boundary Collective intelligence – students can build on each other's knowledge

…continued Reflect on their own learning through online discussion forums Motivated to keep online listening diaries Central location for sharing resources, useful websites etc.. Community building Active collaboration amongst users

Examples of students comments from class Ning Ibrahim – MEP 1B – instant chat for independent learning ‘Chatting could be helpful for us to improve our language and know more things about eachother. So I strongly recommend everyone to take advantage form it. Most students are a little shy in the classroom and chatting could open the way for them to participate in such activities. Could you please Dee let us choose a specific time to have a weekly meeting in the chat room so every single student would participate in it and we will be so happy if you'll be with us too. Please everybody, try to suggest an appropriate time for the meeting after Dee kindly gives us the permission to do so. ‘ ASSET students & IELTS classes also doing similar activities

…continued Students reflecting on class corpus activity after class.. “Collins Cobuild Corpus seems very useful to me. When I learned a new word, it was hard for me to use it because I didn't know the common way people using it. Corpus Concordance Sampler is really useful for me. However, Collocation Sampler can not gives me much imformation. “ “The "Corpus Concordance Sampler" is useful. In the past, when I wrote my essay, I may find it is hard to know which verb I should use. Now using the Sampler, I can not only know how to use the noun with the appropriate verb, but also learn some new words. “
