Disorders are caused by changes in DNA aka mutations.

KARYOTYPING. 1.What is this? 2.How many chromosomes are in a human body cell? 3.How many pairs are in a human cell? 4.Which chromosomes determine gender.
Year 10, Pathway C  Identify genetic disorders from too many/ too few body and sex chromosomes  Explain how genetic disorders occur.
You already know… - A chromosome is a structure that carries genetic information Each cell normally has 23 pairs of chromosomes: 1 pair of sex chromosomes.
KARYOTYPE TESTS. KARYOTYPE =  Image of all the chromosomes from the nucleus of a cell  Can be done to identify genetic disorders.
Chapter 7 Genetic and Developmental Diseases. Review of Structure and Function Fertilization is the uniting of a sperm and ovum resulting in 23 pairs.
Human Genetic Disorders
Laboratory methods look at your genes, which are DNA instructions you inherit from a biological mother and father Genetic tests can identify increased.
Karyotype picture of the chromosomes in a cell used to check for abnormalities Prenatal diagnosis: Trisomy 21 (Down’s syndrome)
(Eukaryotic DNA Structure)
 If a disorder follows an autosomal inheritance pattern, which type of chromosome is it carried on?
Karyotypes.
Turner Syndrome Turner Syndrome is caused by a missing or incomplete x chromosomes. It’s not inherited form an affected parent, not passed down from parent.

Karyotypes & Pedigrees. Karyotypes A chart or picture of a person’s chromosomes.
Karyotypes and Pedigrees
What determines are phenotypes? Autosomes- chromosomes 1-44, pairs 1-22 Sex chromosomes- 23 rd pair of chromosomes – Females have two copies of a large.

Human Genetic Disorders Notes. What causes genetic disorders? Mutations, or changes in a person’s DNA.
Can you guess what these are?. That’s right…they’re Chromosomes! We can arrange chromosomes into homologous pairs in a karyotype to detect abnormalities.
Human Genetics: Karyotypes 46 TOTAL 23 homologous pairs.
Section 2 Human Genetic Disorders. 1 st three terms…also in next 3 slides! Genetic disorder - an abnormal condition that a person inherits through genes.

Chromosomal aberrations Sometimes entire chromosomes can be added or deleted, resulting in a genetic disorder such as Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome). These.
MUTATIONS B-4.8. MUTATIONS A mutation is the alteration of an organism’s DNA. Mutations can result from a malfunction during the process of meiosis or.
Chromosome Mutations. What’s SUPPOSED to happen:  Crossing over (Homologous chromosomes exchange genes)  2 divisions result in genetically unique cells.
Karyotypes Different organisms have different numbers of chromosomes Autosomes: Any chromosome that is not a sex chromosome (X or Y chromosome) – Humans.

Harlequin Icthyosis The diagnosis of Harlequin-type Ichthyosis relies on both physical examination and certain laboratory tests. Physical assessment at birth is vital for the initial diagnosis of Harlequin ichthyosis. Physical examination reveals characteristic symptoms of the condition especially the abnormalities in the skin surface of newborns. Abnormal findings in physical assessments usually result in employing other diagnostic tests to ascertain the diagnosis. Genetic testing is the most specific diagnostic test for harlequin ichthyosis. This test reveals a mutation on the ABCA12 gene. This gene is important in the regulation of protein synthesis for the development of the skin layer. Mutations in the gene may cause impaired transport of lipids in the skin layer and may also lead to shrunken versions of the proteins responsible for skin development. Biopsy of skin may be done to assess the histologic characteristics of the cells. Histological findings usually reveal hyperkeratotic skin cells, which leads to a thick and hard skin layer.
