2 Karyotyping Genetic counselor – collect and analyze data about inheritance patterns and explain results and their significance Test for chromosomal abnormalities

4 Cancer Two types of genes:
Produces proteins called growth factors (start cell division) Tumor suppressor genes say to stop cell division Single mutation does not usually result in cancer but several mutations to those genes = cancer develops

5 “Inherited Cancer” Cancer results from changes to DNA
Since most of the mutations don’t affect the gametes, the cancer isn’t passed on Sometimes, the mutation to the gene does occur in a cell that produces gametes BRCA1 – mutated version of tumor suppressor gene Wont always get breast cancer but they are at a higher risk
