We learned about the naming part of a sentence. The naming part of a sentence tells us… Who? What?

We learned about action parts of a sentence. The action part of a sentence is made of the words that tell what a person or thing does.

A verb is a word that shows action.

An action word or verb is something you can do.

Here are some verbs. You should be able to do these things. runjump sing dance swim kick

Example Mrs. Hamilton rings the bell. Rings is the action verb in the sentence.

Example Minnie Mouse writes her name for Grady. Writes is the action verb in the sentence.

Example The class walks in the hall. Walks is the action verb in the sentence.

Remember An action verb is a word that show what someone or something is doing.

Let’s Practice Circle the action verb in each sentence below. Sal listens to his favorite song. Craig hits the baseball over the fence. The little pig grunts. Dr. Gold examines his patient. The bluebird in the tree sings beautifully. Harold finds a purple crayon.
