Social Structure in India The Hindu Caste System Social Structure in India

How Caste System Began When the Aryans Invaders moved into northwest India, they created a caste system to organize the new society created by their arrival. They initially put together a hierarchy of four “ varnas” (i.e., castes), which later was expanded to include a fifth category.

ARYAN INVADER INDUS VALLEY MERCHANT How could the Aryans control the people who already lived there? With the Caste System! ARYAN INVADER INDUS VALLEY MERCHANT

The caste system initially served to maintain strict social classes between the Aryan invaders and the Indus River Valley people. Over the generations, the origins were forgotten and the system became the basis of all society.

The top three castes or “varnas” were originally only for the Aryan invaders, while the one on the bottom consisted of the local Indus Valley people who were called, “Dravidians”. TOP 3 CLASSES

How did this system affect society? Strict, hereditary membership into birth caste. You were born into your assigned caste and died in it as well. Marriage only among member of same caste. Job/Occupation choices restricted. Personal contact with other castes restricted.

Each caste is born out of Brahman (the creator) Caste Systems Beliefs Each caste is born out of Brahman (the creator) Brahmins—thinkers/knowers Ksatriya—doers Vaisya—provide food for the belly Sudra—do the work

How One’s Caste is Determined Reincarnation A person is born, lives, dies, and is reborn again many times. Souls are reborn many times until they are pure enough to be with the creator, Brahman Karma A person’s social position in the next life is determined by his conduct in the present life.

How One’s Caste is Determined Laws of Manu Hindu book of sacred law Rules and restrictions for daily life Dharma Code of behavior or set of moral and ethical rules that govern the conduct of each social class. Each group has a different set of rules to live by.
