Early Release Day NC FALCON: Module 1 East Elementary October 2010

NC FALCON North Carolina’s Formative Assessment Learning Community’s Online Network /

What and Why? Developed in an effort to provide NC teachers with a basic understanding of formative assessment Illustrate the role formative assessment should play in a comprehensive, balanced assessment system.  aligned with state standards

A little more about…..NC FALCON A state mandated online professional development program. Consists of FIVE modules All modules must be completed by ALL certified staff by the end of the fiscal year We will be completing these modules together in ERD and PLCs.  What if I am unable to attend one (or more) of the ER Days?

Module 1: Important of Formative Assessment Integral to instruction Foundation of a quality assessment system Assessment is NOT new! What is new is the FOCUS….  Important to invest in helping teachers and students grow in the area of formative assessments. modules are the beginning of the state’s investment

Today’ Objectives Communicate the importance of formative assessment Distinguish between formative, benchmark, and summative assessments Share with others how formative assessment fits into a balanced assessment system.

We use the general term assessment to refer to all those activities undertaken by teachers -- and by their students in assessing themselves -- that provide information to be used as feedback to modify teaching and learning activities. Such assessment becomes formative assessment when the evidence is actually used to adapt the teaching to meet student needs. Black, P. & Wiliam, D Inside the Black Box: Raising Standards through Classroom Assessment

Developing 21 st Century Learners The North Carolina State Board of Education’s guiding mission is to produce 21st century learners who are globally competitive and prepared for work and post-secondary education.

Exploring Assessment The State Board of Education recognizes the need for an assessment system that not only measures 21st century learning but also informs instruction as stated in these goals. North Carolina Public Schools will produce globally competitive students.  Every student's achievement is measured with an assessment system that informs and evaluates the knowledge, skills performance, and dispositions needed in the 21st century. North Carolina Public Schools will be led by 21st century professionals.  Every teacher and administrator will use a 21st century assessment system to inform instruction and measure 21st century knowledge, skills, performance, and dispositions.

Key Components of a Balanced Assessment System

Old (NC) Assessment System

Definition of Formative Assessment Formative assessment is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve intended instructional outcomes (CCSSO FAST SCASS, 2006).
