1 Module I: Importance of Formative Assessment Part 2
NC FALCON East Elementary October 2010

2 Let’s Review….. Balanced Assessment System Formative Assessment:
a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve intended instructional outcomes (CCSSO FAST SCASS, 2006).

3 A “Little” Research about Student Achievement
According to research from Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam, students who are formatively assessed have shown significant gains in achievement. The learning gains have been, in some cases, ½ to 1 standard deviation on standardized tests with the largest gains from low performing students. Statewide summative tests such EOG or EOC tests are examples of where you could see this type of significant growth. To further contextualize this thought, this growth would be equivalent to raising an average student’s score at the 50th percentile to the 85th percentile.

4 Formative Assessment Model

5 Where Am I Going? Define Clear Learning Targets -All targets should be written in language students can understand. Provide Clear Criteria for Success - Students must be able to recognize and describe the quality of work that is expected.

6 Where Am I Now? Teachers and Students….
Collect Evidence of Learning to determine where students are in relation to the intended learning outcomes. Document Evidence of Learning to record learning as it happens and to communicate this progress to their students and parents.

7 How Do I Close The Gap? Provide Descriptive Feedback: - Communicate enough information for students to determine what they need to do to reach the learning target and close any learning gaps that exist. Student Ownership: - The students must use the descriptive feedback provided to move his or her learning toward the intended target.

8 Collecting Evidence Comparison
Formative Assessment Benchmark/ Summative Assessment Concept mapping Selected Response Whiteboards Short Answer ABC Cards Extended Written Response “Clickers” (Senteos) Performance Tasks Assessment Conversations Computer Simulation Observation Formative Assessment… is NOT a thing. is a PROCESS! is NOT something you give students. should be thought of as a VERB; not a NOUN. It is an ACTION!

9 Thoughts from the State Superintendent…
Formative Assessment is like a GPS……….. A very important tool in the 21st century in helping people to get to a destination is a GPS. ….the GPS will allow us to take data, analyze those data, and then help us to get to our destination. Dr. June Atkinson
