2014 Issues & Strategy execution Piotr Skowroński 18 January 2016 CLIC Workshop

The issues Losses in TL2 Not clean recombination Emittance growth Closure Dispersion control Optics control on model level Non-linear dispersion and chromaticity BPI's in TL1 giving different reading for 1.5 GHz and 3 GHz BPI's droop BPI non-linearity Inconsistent quad scans Faulty BPMs Phase sag 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Sources of the issues 1/2 Losses in TL2 1. Too big emittance 2. Insufficient control of the optics, predominantly of dispersion 3. Insufficient orbit and Twiss closure in the recombination Not clean recombination 1. Insufficient orbit and Twiss closure in the recombination 2. Stability: drifts in the machine make the systematic setup difficult, if not impossible, and move quickly the beam from sweet point Emittance growth 1. Insufficient orbit and Twiss closure in the recombination 2. Insufficient control of the optics, predominantly of dispersion 3. Non-linear dispersion 4. Large chroma causes very fast decoherence in case of imperfect steering Closure 1. DL issue with BPIs: TL1 1.5GHz response 2. CR issue with BPIs: droop leading to readout drift 3. Not enough space for orbit correction at DL ejection 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Sources of the issues 2/2 Dispersion control 1. Large dispersion beating from very small errors in k1, orbit, beam energy 2. Missing dispersion correction knobs 3. Missing dispersion correction application Optics control on model level 1. Model not accurate enough (optics errors) in Frascati chicane, TL2, TL2' 2. The nominal optics is not optimal with higher order and stability respects 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Action List Before Beam  Extract the 1.5/3GHz results (Piotr)  BPI checks with BI (Steffen) ?  Check attenuators for phase monitors to assure max S/N for best feed- back operation: (Frank)  Preparation of TL2 optics with smoother non-linear dispersion (Piotr)  Strategy conception for closure of transverse optics and tooling (can we do better than brute force quad-scan - rematch loop) 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Action List Action requiring beam  Tuning of feedbacks (Tobias + Lukas)  Response matrix with screens as beam position monitors - (Piotr)  k1 measurements with Corrector-Quad-BPM and Corrector-Quad-Screen - (Piotr)  Response matrix measurements with quadrupoles changed as much as possible to assure transmission (Piotr + Jack, done in TL1)  BPI non-linearity measurements  Verify if DL BPI's have the same issue ? 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Action List Not for now 1. Stability requirements (Lukas) 2. Analysis for new feedbacks 3. TL1 optics with R56 opposite to TL2 to assure R56=0 from linac to TBL 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Tooling List 1/3 Phase space painting + analysis tools (Piotr - partially ready(?))  Other related studies : Aperture meter BPI non-linearity correction for optics measurements (Davide) Tool for energy spread optimization in CTS segmented dump - (Davide) Tool for BPR475 flattening using MKS02 phase program (Davide -) 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Tooling List 1/3 Orbit tools:  Dispersion Target Steering is the biggest priority (Davide) (ready, to be tested) implement as much as possible with simulation backend connected to MAD-X (ready and partially tested)  Tool for re-fix orbit around spectro 4  Tool for re-fix orbit around spectro 10  Tool for re-fix orbit around Frascati chicane  Orbit maching of DL with 3Ghz beam  Dispersion Target Steering for all the main lines (horizontal and vertical). 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Tooling List 2/3 Tool that optimizes orbit on center of sextupoles using fact that kick is quadratic in one of its planes (! !) Dispersion monitor tool Quad scan program in simulation mode (camera images generated with sigmas from MADX quad scans simulation) to verify that the program works fine (!Reidar - tool works on linux consoles!) Response matrix comparison when measuring for steering: app Davide - extraction from MADX (Piotr) Energy stabilization and flattening feedback with MKS15: use 2 BPMs upstream of the F.Chicane to check stability of the beam: (Tobias to be agreed with Davide) 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

BPI droop subtraction for closed orbit measurement (Tobias) Overnight random corrections to improve transmission in desperate cases like TL2 (! !) Tune measurement and tuning in CR revival (Tobias) Feedbacks stall on beam parameters change (Tobias)  Gun Timing  Beam to spectro 4  Intensity change Tool for quadscan measurement overnight continuously (with static initial conditions first). Not for now:  Knobs for dispersion correction 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016 Tooling List 3/3

Commissioning strategy Linac - not an issue Feedbacks - they should stall whenever beam parameters or destination change (time window, intensity, beam to spectro 4) because they do more harm than good when trying to adapt  Loading  Injector - implement sanity checks, for example sending beam to spectro 4 makes it run away  TWT - low priority because the phase stability was not an issue; should use only average over the pulse and not try to adapt to pulse shape with switches 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Commissioning strategy Linac - not an issue Steering  DFS to be tried in the linac - should be straight forward  DTS (Dispersion Target Steering) will be tried everywhere else  Change of orbit in the Linac after a bend is on or any other reason Define strategy to recover after common cases  after BHB.1040 on -> use corrector 0920  after spectro 4 on - >  after injector change -> Apply automatic tool from Davide to re-steer the end of linac to the reference orbit RF setting up  Tool to adjust phases to flatten BPRs implemented by Davide; apply ones at the startup should be sufficient Optimization of energy spread in spectrometer, using also the algorithm from steering 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Commissioning strategy Delay Loop  Verify that BPI's don't have the same problem as TL1  Dispersion Target Steering  Dispersion Correction  Scan RF bump height to find optimum for closure  Measure and correct beta beating (Twiss closure)  Orbit closure in 2 steps 3 GHz with magnetic (using TL1 pickups)  Test it with 3GHz beam splitting Refine with 1.5GHz using CR BPMs (and not watching TL1) 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Commissioning strategy TL1 Implement optics with reverse R56 of TL2 PFF optics to assure R56 = 0 from phase monitor to phase monitor? Also for nominal optics R56 is not null from linac to CLEX due to uncorrected doglegs contributions at CR extraction, vertical and TL2 prime Steering Dispersion Correction 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Commissioning strategy CR  Give a try to the new optics for 1-2 days Check immediately if sextupole correction works or not If yes profit easier tune measurements and corrections  Orbit  Closed orbit  DTS  We could try tune measurement with some dirty off momentum cleaning For example try to scrape somewhere in CT  Could try to use extraction kicker for better tune measurement I doubt it is feasible 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Commissioning strategy CR  How to measure beta beating? It is a lengthy procedure Automated overnight? (Tobias) Automatic range adjustment?  Correct the Twiss beating  Optics correction of CR - procedure (from 29/09/2014): inject beam. Keep it N turns. extract the beam and measure Twiss parameters. repeat for different N up to to see what to do next after those results. 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Commissioning strategy TL2 and CLEX  Get the straight beam through for nominal and PFF optics  Dispersion Target Steering, hopefully after alignment it will be easier  Steering  Dispersion correction  Optics measurements with phase space painting (regular RM we should get as steering by-product) 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Status Many items were successfully implemented and were the key for the last results Lack of time or available beam time did not let to complete the rest The missing points for drive beam  Stability  Emittance  Transmission from CR to the ends in CLEX  Optics control 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

The last year The final report(s) need to be delivered in 2016/2017 This time there is no chance we catch the result in the following year: all the data points must be measured this year To be efficient:  Assign the responsible person who follows each topic  Make a list of needed measurements  Priorities  Group the measurements by the required machine setup, thoroughly execute the list not to leave anything for later  Check preparation for the most important experiments Presentation on the EV or OP meeting with the procedure (quick and dirty)  Gives chance to think what is really needed and if it is prepared  get feedback how it could be improved  or if a better way to measure exists Reviews every couple of months 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016

Notes TBM conditioning  Over nights factor 8  Higher rep-rate during days? Beta beating from amplitude: kicking the beam with extraction kicker (when the decoheres and settles on the closed solution) global fit A_n*sin(mu0*t+fi_n)*exp(-d*t)  A_n amplitude at BPM ~sqrt(beta)  mu0 tune (global variable)  t turn  Fi_n phase advance from the kick  d damping 18 January CLIC Workshop 2016
