Software Factors Affecting Interface Design

Learning Objectives Discuss the factors affecting interface design.

Factors affecting the design of an interface Who will be using it? Ability of workers with computer systems? Ability of workers with computer systems? Have they received training/are they used to computer use? What information needs to be conveyed? Under what circumstances must it operate? The environment in which the system would be used… Lighting conditions on a shop floor may be different to those in an office. Lighting conditions on a shop floor may be different to those in an office. How effective will it be in conveying the information?

Factors affecting the design of an interface What hardware is going to be used to communicate in the HCI? This will determine style of interface, e.g. touch screen input or keyboard. An office will probably use text while a shop floor will probably need diagrammatic responses. An office will probably use text while a shop floor will probably need diagrammatic responses.
