MICHIGAN EXAMS Presentado por: Kelly Roa Roa 65924

The Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE) is a high-intermediate-level (B2) general EFL exam. The language used in the test is American-English. The Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE) formally testifies the knowledge of English at B2 level, as outlined by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Who is it for? The ECCE emphasizes communicative use of English rather than a formalistic knowledge of English, it is aimed at students who are able to function and perform communicative transactions in all four skill areas of the language (speaking, listening, reading, writing).

How is the ECCE scored? The ECCE is scored using a method called aggregate scoring this method allows students who are weak in one area to compensate by being strong in another area This means you can fail one of the four sections (Speaking, Listening, Grammar-Vocabulary-Reading, Writing) and still pass the ECCE exam if your scores on other sections are significantly higher than the minimum pass level.

Students who fail two or more sections will not pass the exam Student must answer about 65% of the multiple-choice Listening and Grammar- Vocabulary-Reading items correctly in order to pass those sections.

What is the Michigan ECCE test like? The test takes 3 hours and has these sections Listening - 2 sections, 50 questions Grammar - 35 questions Vocabulary - 35 questions Reading - 3 sections, 30 questions –Part 1 –Part 2 –part 3 Writing - 1 task Speaking - interview with examiner

SCORES AND RESULTS Sections 1 and 2 are scored by computer with a 65% percentage of correct answers. Sections 3 and 4 are evaluated according to criteria established by the University of Michigan. The examination is administered twice a year, in May and December. The written section of the examination is administered on a Saturday and the speaking section is administered on the same or another day, before or after.

Assessment principles of the ECCE: ECCE section scores are reported in the following five bands: High Pass (HP), Pass (P), Low Pass (LP): are considered passing section levels Borderline Fail (BF) and Fail (F): are considered failing section levels. Candidates with scores in the LP (or higher) in all four sections are awarded an ECCE certificate. Candidates with scores in the BF range in two or more sections or candidates with scores in the F range in one or more sections are not awarded an ECCE certificate. Sections scores for the Listening and GVR sections are reported as numerical scores (0-1000) and section scores for the Speaking and Writing sections are reported as letter scores (Ε-Α).
