DE Science Middle School 5-Minute Prep for Universe How We Study the Universe Modern Astronomy

Modern Astronomy—The Key Ideas Powerful telescopes on the Earth’s surface and in space give scientists information about moons, planets, stars, and other celestial objects. Optical telescopes use visible light to gather data. Refractive telescopes concentrate light using lenses, while reflective telescopes concentrate light using mirrors. Reflective telescopes are less expensive and easier to build. An electromagnetic spectrum analysis is used to study stars and other far-away objects.

Modern Astronomy—Prior Knowledge Students should have a general understanding of the general tools of an astronomer. Students should know of the invention of the telescope and may have background knowledge on subsequent refinements. It may be helpful to use the Exploration: Watching the Universe before beginning this unit. It may also help if students:Watching the Universe Have seen or used a telescope. Have reviewed the Ancient Astronomy information before beginning this lesson.

Modern Astronomy— Common Misconceptions Telescopes have always been powerful tools that astronomers use to look at objects that are very far away. –Reality: Telescopes began as simple “spyglasses” and have evolved into powerful tools. There is only one type of telescope. –Reality: There are several different kinds of optical and electromagnetic telescopes. One type of telescope is superior to all others. –Reality: Different types of telescopes are used to observe different characteristics of celestial bodies.

Modern Astronomy— Using DE Science Content Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources, or you can get to them through the browser or search feature. Video Segment: All about TelescopesAll about Telescopes Interactive Video: The Hubble Space TelescopeThe Hubble Space Telescope Integrated Science Simulation: TelescopesTelescopes Exploration: Watching the UniverseWatching the Universe Video Segment: Astronomers and the Technology Used to Explore SpaceAstronomers and the Technology Used to Explore Space

Modern Astronomy—Instructional Ideas Show students the Video Segments All about Telescopes and Astronomers and the Technology Used to Explore Space. In small groups, ask students to recall all the information they can, writing each fact on an adhesive note. Then have students arrange the notes into categories. Discuss the results as a class. Ask students to describe what they have noted and to explain how they decided to categorize the notes. All about TelescopesAstronomers and the Technology Used to Explore Space As students watch the Interactive Video The Hubble Space Telescope, they should take notes. After watching, they will make a “For Sale” poster for the Hubble, highlighting its great features and special abilities. The Hubble Space Telescope
