John Womersley Hello! It’s good to be here! Not too many broken plates (yet…)

John Womersley Too much hype? Professor John Wood, Chief Executive Officer of the CCLRC, said "John has a tremendous reputation within the particle physics field. We are delighted to have him on the team at this key time when the UK's role in the next generation of particle physics experiments needs real vision and leadership."

John Womersley So, what am I planning? I don’t (yet) have a detailed plan for PPD –Obviously such a plan is needed for the next grants submission ( ) I do have some ideas about where I think we want to go Let’s look at the physics topics:

John Womersley The Energy Frontier Timeline (Tevatron) ATLAS and CMS Linear Collider Challenges Operate detectors and Tier I centre Ensure a scientific return on our major investment in the detectors –Leadership in analysis –SLHC Secure a leading role in detector development (LCFI, Calice…), (+ accelerator) –Cost? Timescale? + Develop a future vision for our computing efforts

Strengthen PPD involvement? Create a bandwagon effect towards a neutrino factory – and make RAL the logical site

John Womersley The Dark Universe Timeline Zeplin 2 Zeplin 3 Zeplin Max? Challenges Ensure a scientific return on our major investment in these detectors –Leadership in analysis Develop the longer term strategy in conjunction with PPARC and the universities –LHC results?

John Womersley Common themes The preceding slides show We are well placed in all the important areas of particle physics (and are making important contributions in all of them) There are some common opportunities and challenges –Experiments starting operation: may call for some re-think of our relationship with the universities make sure we take a strong and visible role in analysis –Well placed in a number of important new initiatives (LCFI, MICE…) but funding is tight in all cases, and our leadership can be challenged I have some modest degree of support from CCLRC and PPARC

John Womersley Priorities The LHC must be (and must be seen to be) a success –A huge investment with huge scientific potential –LHC experiments are our flagships (for us and the field in general) –Can generate the excitement needed to unlock future initiatives Linear Collider –Highest priority for the field as a whole (but…) –Make sure we play a leadership role nEDM, dark matter –Want to maintain breadth of programme with smaller, clever projects where we can have a big impact Neutrinos, MICE, neutrino factory –High priority for the field as a whole –Potential path to a world- unique, £ multi-billion facility here (but…)

John Womersley Organisational matters FFtF –“This time it’s for real” - things are moving quite quickly Workshops underway to define process and organisation (Tony M. is a key player) –Plan this autumn; implement by March; then “consolidate” –There will be an all-hands briefing for the Science Programmes Business Unit next week (25 th Oct) –Will do my best to prevent any craziness –FFtF affects support functions - scientific management stays the same Organisation of the Department –For now, the structure remains as is (with Peach  Womersley) –I do not plan any immediate upheavals –I am aware of some important gaps and will try to fill them in a timely manner (but not so hasty as to make mistakes…)
