Ethical Eating Caty, Courtney, Jacqueline, Tiffany

What is “Ethical”? O “Ethical Eating is a lifestyle of mindfulness of the effects our food choices have on us and the world around us.” ( eating) eating O What impact does the product have on: O The Environment O The Farmers O The Consumers O …and Everything along the way T

Ethical IS NOT a Diet O “I can never eat this.” O “This is the only thing I can eat.” O “Carbs are evil.” INSTEAD.. Eating Ethically is merely just knowing. T

Myths about Ethical Eating O “No meat.” O False. Ethical eaters DO eat meat. The difference being they KNOW where the meat came from. O “I have to shop at a weird or different supermarket.” O False. Ethical eaters can shop at regular supermarkets, again, they KNOW where the product came from. T

How can You be Ethical? O Be Eco-Friendly. O Know the distance the food you consume travels. Eating local food as well as less processed food can help. O Respect human rights. O How are the farmers treated who produced the food you consume? Human rights are equally as important as animal rights. O Animal cruelty needs to stop. O Learn about how animals are raised at various farms. Learn about how they are raised, what they are fed, etc. T

Unethical Companies O Coca-Cola O “In India, Coke unlawfully pumped 1.5 million liters (400,000 gallons) of water a day from local reserves, leaving farmers without enough water to irrigate their crops, and draining the community’s drinking water supply.” O Contaminated fields, wells, and canals. O As well as unlawfully pumping water, Coca Colas has also been unethical in other countries including: Mexico, China, Columbia, and others. They have been found to use child labor, lack of proper equipment, as well as other unethical activity. O Nestle and Monsato are two other unethical companies. J

Palm Oil O The production of palm oil has caused massive deforestation. O Due to deforestation: O a vast amount of species could potentially be eliminated. O The lack of trees and other species can affect the environment as a whole. J

Alan Richman’s Ten Commandments of Ethical Eating O If you have to eat in a hurry, eat a salad. O Food wrapped in plastic or Styrofoam is ethical only if you're an astronaut. O Know how the animal you eat was raised. You can lead an unexamined life, but your food cannot. O Transform your front lawn into a garden. (Be prepared for neighbors to consider you a fruitcake—or worse, a European.) O Nobody's health ever declined from eating unadvertised products. O Consider vegans a warning sign of ethical eating run amok. O Buying eleven-grain bread instead of seven-grain bread does not make you a better person. O The $4.99 all-you-can-eat pancake special at IHOP is not an ethical meal, even without bacon. O If you have to eat in airports, don't. (But you already knew that.) T

Here’s Some Ways To Start Eating Ethically O 197/ 197/ T

How is OUR Meal Ethical? O All of the products came from a LOCAL, ORGANIC farmer’s market in Lancaster, PA. O In other words, we KNOW where it came from, the distance it traveled, and all the steps in between. J

Vegetarian Chili O Ingredients: O 2 tablespoons and 1.5 teaspoons Olive Oil O 1.25 medium onion, chopped O 5 Bay leaves O 2.5 teaspoons ground cumin O.25 cups and 1 tablespoon of dried oregano O 2 tablespoons and 1.5 teaspoons of salt O 5 stalks of celery, chopped O 5 green bell peppers, chopped O 5 jalapeno peppers, chopped O 7.5 cloves of garlic, chopped O 5 (4oz.) cans of chopped green Chile peppers, drained O 7.5 (28 ounces) cans whole peeled tomatoes, crushed O.5 cups and 2 tablespoons of chili powder O 2 tablespoons and 1.5 teaspoons ground black pepper O 2.5 (15 ounces) cans kidney beans, drained O 2.5 (15 ounces) cans garbanzo beans, drained O 2.5 (15 ounces) cans black beans O 2.5 (15 ounces) cans whole kernel corn J

Instructions O Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in onion, and season with bay leaves, cumin, oregano, and salt. Cook and stir until onion is tender, then mix in the celery, green bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, garlic, and green Chile peppers. Reduce heat to low, cover pot, and simmer for five minutes. O Mix the tomatoes into the pot. Season chili with chili powder and pepper. Stir in the kidney beans, garbanzo beans, and black beans. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for 45 minutes. Stir in the corn, and continue cooking 5 minutes before serving. J

Is it Really More Expensive? O For our meal: O Total: $42.59 / 20 = $2.13 O..Think about fast food.. O About $6-$7 per meal In a money sense, eating ethically is not really more expensive. However, it requires more thought before consumption, but the world is lazy. J

In Conclusion.. ETHICAL EATING IS MERELY KNOWING.
