For references and more details see Becker et al. (2004) on astro-ph/ A multi-wavelength search for a counterpart of the brightest unidentified -ray source 3EG J ROSAT PSPC field around 3EG J The 68%, 95%, and 99% contour lines from the 3EG EGRET likelihood map and the ROSAT HRI sources detected in our reana- lysis of archival ROSAT data are indicated. Chandra ACIS field of 3EG J The 68%, 95% and 99% contour lines from the 3EG EGRET likelihood map are shown. The position of the 38 sources detected by Chandra are indicated. Likelihood map ( > 100 MeV) of 3EG J (Hatman et al. 1999), with smoothed contours superposed. The fields covered by the four GBT radio observations are indicated by black circles. The cross indicates the position of RX J Results: In search of the counterpart to the brightest unidentified gamma-ray source 3EG J (2CG078+2) we have observed the Gamma-Cygni field with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). To complete the analysis we reanalyzed archival ROSAT data. With Chandra it became possible for the first time to measure the position of the putative gamma-ray counterpart RX J with sub-arcsecond accuracy and to deduce its X-ray spectral characteristics. These observations demonstrate that RX J is associated with a K- field star and therefore is unlikely to be the counterpart of the bright gamma-ray source in the SNR G as had been previously suggested by Brazier et al. (1996). In addition to RX J , the Chandra observation detected 37 X-ray sources which were correlated with catalogs of optical and infrared data. Subsequent GBT radio observations covered the complete 99% EGRET likelihood contour of 3EG J with a sensitivity limit of L 820 ~ 0.1 mJy kpc 2 which is lower than most of the recent deep radio search limits. If there is a pulsar operating in 3EG J , this sensitivity limit suggests that the pulsar either does not produce significant amounts of radio emission or that its geometry is such that the radio beam does not intersect with the line of sight. Finally, reanalysis of archival ROSAT data leads to a flux upper limit of f x ( keV) < 1.8 x erg s -1 cm -2 for a putative point-like X-ray source located within the 68% confidence contour of 3EG J Adopting the SNR age of 5400 yrs and assuming a spin-down to X-ray energy conversion factor of this upper limit constrains the parameters of a putative neutron star as a counterpart for 3EG J to be P 160 (d/1.5 kpc) -1 ms, 5 x (d/1.5 kpc) -1 s s -1 and 9 x (d/1.5 kpc) -1 G. The final EGRET catalog of gamma-ray sources lists 271 objects (Hartman et al. 1999) of which about 170 are unidentified. 3EG J is among the brightest persistent sources in the EGRET sky. Originally listed as a COS-B source (2CG078+01) it is still unidentified. Its gamma-ray flux is consistent with constant flux and the spectrum is hard and best described by a power-law with photon-index of Merck et al. (1996) found evidence for a spectral break at ~4 GeV which has been confirmed in recent studies by Reimer & Bertsch (2001). The 3EG catalog placed the EGRET source at RA(2000) = 20 h 21 m 1.0 s, Dec=40 o 17’ 48” within the Gamma-Cygni supernova remnant G The remnant G has a kinematic distance of 1.5 kpc 30% and consists of a 1 o -diameter, circular radio shell with two bright, broad opposing arcs on its rim (Higgs, Landecker & Roger 1977; Wendker, Higgs & Landecker 1991). It is estimated to have an age of 5400 yr (Sturner & Dermer 1995). The point source RX J is located within the 95% confidence contour of the 2EG position of 2CG (Brazier et al. 1996), and was suggested by these authors to be the X-ray counterpart to the gamma-ray source. Brazier et al. (1996) and Carraminana et al. (2000) provided a possible optical counterpart for RX J Optical follow-up observations revealed a 14.5 magnitude K0V star nearby and within the ~6’’ ROSAT error circle. The X-ray to optical flux ratio of this star was found to be marginally consistent with that found for late-type stars (Stocke et al. 1991; Fleming et al. 1995), so that an association of RX J with the -ray source could not be excluded (Brazier et al. 1996). The 3EG catalog (Hartman et al. 1999), however, improved the position of 2CG for which the proposed counterpart RX J is no longer located within the 95% contour of 3EG J The 99% likelihood contour, however, still includes RX J Images from ROSAT, Chandra and the Green Bank Telescope with the 3EG likelihood contour lines overlaid are shown below. Further Chandra observations to explore the uncovered parts of the EGRET likelihood-map with higher sensitivity than possible with ROSAT are accepted for AO6.
