Pg 14 of IAN

Objective: To practice using a compound microscope and to learn the names of each part and its function.

Parts of a Microscope: :Lens at the top of the body tube; magnifies 10X :Cylinder which contains lenses, mirrors and a prism. Also positions the objective the correct distance from the eyepiece. : this wheel holds three objectives and may be swiveled to change the power of the magni- fication. : lenses on the nosepiece : lens which magnifies the eyepiece 4X (Total magnification= ) :multiplies the magnification of the eyepiece 10X (Total magnification= ) eyepiece body tube revolving nosepiece objectives low power objective 40X medium power objective 100X

: multiplies magnification of eyepiece 40X Total magnification= ) : platform on which specimen is placed for viewing. : holds slides in place. : wheel located under the stage containing holes of different sizes to regulate amount of light reaching the specimen. :the part fastened to the stand which supports the body tube and should be used to lift and move the microscope. : heavy metal part for supporting the micro- scope. high power objective 400X stage stage clips diaphragm arm base

: raises and lowers the stage and focuses for low power. : used for sharp focusing the specimen (on medium and high power) : directs light up through the specimen. coarse adjustment knob fine adjustment knob light

body tube revolving nosepiece Low power objective Medium Power objective high power objective stage clips diaphragm light eyepiece arm stage coarse adjustment knob fine adjustment knob base

1.Always start with the LOW power objective in place. 2.ONLY use the COARSE adjustment knob on low power. 3.When switching to medium power, only use the FINE adjustment knob to fine focus. 4.Specimen must always be centered under the lens. 5.Both you and your lab partner must draw on each power exactly what you see when the microscope is focused. Size, shape, and orientation are all factors in your drawing.
