What are some of the problems with this account? Divide into groups of 3-4 Brainstorm different ways in which you could organize the information to help make more sense to a reader. How might a historian go about selecting and arranging their facts?

Importance/significance Social Institutions Temporal Frames (TIME) Spatial Scales (SPACE) On your whiteboard, write down what you think that each of these tools mean.

Can be difficult if the historical problem or question is too general or not specific enough. What if we narrowed the focus to the “First Day of School around the Globe” or “Sally’s First Day of School”? How would the information that would be considered significant would be different for each?

Created to meet the needs of societies in order for them to continue to exist. Revolve around human issues that affect everyone. Need for food Clothing Shelter Order or safety How to educate the people Solutions include schools, governments, economic systems, communication systems What social institution is addressed in the “First Day of School”?

When did it happen? Is this the first day of school in 2014 or 1914? How do we know?

You are going to learn more later. You will use all four tools for selecting and organizing historical facts and sources over the next few days. Our focus right now will be on investigating ways to select and organize facts according to significance.

Where did it happen? Are we looking at the first day of school in a global sense, as a country, in one community, or an individual’s first day? Space is about the location under investigation.

Imagine you want to leave some evidence – PRIMARY SOURCES – of how we live now for people to learn about us 1,000 years from now. Imagine we are going to build a time capsule that will be opened in 1,000 years. What would you include in your time capsule to let people know about life in Michigan, the United States or the world now? On your whiteboard, list ten (10) things you would include in the time capsule.

Look at your list carefully and think about the items you have included in your time capsule. Rank your choices by placing them on the TOP TEN sheet in order of importance. 1 = most important 10 = least important Now that you have ranked your items, complete the right hand of the column and explain why you think each item is important.

What if you were able to only place three items into the time capsule? Which three items would you like to place into the time capsule? Write the names of the top three items ON THE BOARD you would like to see included into the time capsule!!

We need to decide what is in and what is out!! You have two sticky notes. Place them next to the top choices you would like to see go into the time capsule.

Look at the top three items on your list. Write the reasons why you placed things at the top and bottom on the back of the handout. What made the top three items more important than the bottom three? Could it have changed the way people lived? Does it impact lots of people? Does it impact lots of areas of life?

Move into groups of 3-4… You may not be in a group with people who were in your previous group!!! Share your ideas about why you ranked the top three items the way you did. As a group, come up with 3-4 rules for determining the significance of your choices.

I want to know what your group’s RULES are for determining if items are significant.

Where did these ideas come from? Review the list of ideas. Do we need to make any changes?

Create a bookmark that reflects the ideas that we have just come up with. Your bookmark must include the following: Your neatest and best work Your FIRST & LAST NAME The class’s rules for significance Color and design – make it something you can be proud of!!! P.R.I.D.E.

Turn to page… Read … Use your bookmark to determine the following: Did the author make a good choice to include the event? Explain if the author made a good case for the event’s inclusion. Why or why not?
