Feb. 4, 2011 Welcome Assignment Clear desk of all items except for something to write with Together in your lab groups – Write the pre-lab Title: _________________________________ Research Question: How can species be identified through observing behavior and other characteristics? Background Information: Internet, textbook, lab picture sample glossary Hypothesis: N/A Materials: Part 1: microscope Slide cover slip pond water pipet Procedure: Part 1Carefully prepare a glass slide with a sample of pond water Observe it under the microscope (LOW & MEDIUM power lens ONLY) Draw a picture and describe what is observed Complete All 3 samples Part 2: lab picture samples laptop or desktop computer Algae ID chart Part 2 Using the internet and the lab picture samples, complete the ID chart.

Microscope Use Microscope stays in one place, people move Everyone stands One cover slip, one glass slide, no more Cover slip lies flat on napkin when drying LOW and MEDIUM power lens ONLY!!! Unplug Wash hands when done

Conclusion What key words did you use to describe your lab picture samples? What key words did you use to search for the identification of the lab picture samples? Why is it important for scientists to look at similarities and differences between organisms? Why is it important for scientists to categorize organisms? How could you use the skill of classifying things in your everyday life? In the world of work?
