Climate Action Plans and Energy Strategies (CAPES) + Reducing Our Carbon Footprints An Open Classroom Charrette Led by Dann Sklarew, with Support from GMU Sustainability Office, Rob Johnson, and YOU!

Today’s Game Plan Welcome: –Self-Intros, & Purpose of this Charette-Style Open Class Quick Pre-test Orientation: –Global Climate Impacts on Mason –Mason Greenhouse GAS Inventory –CAP Methodology –Syllabi (EVPP490, 692 & 991) – for enrolled students Next Steps: –Individual Task 1, Team Tasks 1 & 2 (note deadlines dates) –Feb. 11 Session (CAP structure, root causes, research) –Out-of-class: CAP Kick-off w/Dr. Merten; Mason Energy Roundtable on Clean Coal.

Self Intros and Course Purpose

Pre-Test 1.Who are the key stakeholders who should be involved with creating, legitimizing and implementing GMU’s CAP? 2.What does one need to know and be able to do in order to be a “Climate Action Champion” at Mason? At home? Beyond Mason? 3.What are the most effective means for informing and involving the broader Mason campus in CAP planning and implementation?

Pre-Test (continued) 4. How soon can Mason achieve net zero GHG emissions? What are the most important actions (technical, policy or behavioral) actions which should be undertaken to do so? 5. What recommendations would you propose for creating an institutional framework at Mason to implement and adaptively manage GHG reductions hereafter? (Optional for undergrads)

Individual Task(s) for Next Two Weeks Task I1. Join sitehttp:// 1.Review Mason GHG Inventory (once posted) 2.Estimate your current GHG emissions 3.Select at least 5 (EVPP490) to 10 (EVPP692+) personal GHG reduction actions you think you can achieve by Spring Break; note eCO2 saved. 4.Propose and briefly characterize 2+ (EVPP490) to 4+ new measures which you recommend adding to the menu of GHG reduction actions (e.g., “OPT-OUT,” “C-free PO,” “leaves2paper”). 5.EVPP991: Dann with 1 st & 2 nd desired scope to lead; EVPP692: Dann with 1 st -3 rd desired sector to focus on By noon on Feb. 10, join site and post results from #I1.1-4 to “Task I1” page of Wiki (see model there).

Team Task(s) for Next Two Weeks Task T1: From Model Campus CAPs lists on references pages of Review 1 CAP (1 team per CAP, 1 st come, 1 st serve) 2.Identify 3-5 “best practices” therein with respect to (a) content, (b) structure, and (c) features (e.g., cool charts). By Wed., Feb 4, post findings to Task T1 page on masoncap wiki. Task T2: For ONE source of GHG emissions at Mason (1 team per source): 1.Create a plausible “causality chart” to reveal how GHG emissions from that source relate to underlying root cause(s) of your choice. 2.[Optional for undergrads:] Identify 3-7 research questions (per team) which would need to be answered in order to confirm the validity of your causality chart. By noon on Tues, Feb 10, results to Dr. Dann… PS If you’d like access to a free teleconference line (only cost of long-distance call) for your team, please contact Dr. Dann.
