Welcome & Introductions

Background: The Presidents Climate Commitment Signed March 25, 2008

UConn’s Commitment… 1.Create structure to guide development & implementation Climate Action Task Force (CATF) - established May 2008 CATF Workgroups – established Fall 2008 2.Complete GHG inventory and update annually 2004, 2006 inventories completed 2007 inventory near completion 1.Develop a Climate Action Plan (CAP) ( Due by May 2010) CAP Project Manager hired September 2008 Carbon neutrality by 2050 (or sooner) w/ interim targets & milestones Integrate sustainability into curriculum – education, research and outreach Goal: Draft CAP by August 2009.

Climate Action Task Force Environmental Policy Advisory Council Institutional Structure

2008-2009 Workgroup Charge:  Develop Transportation-Based Mitigation Strategies  What are the major sources of emissions? (2007 GHG Inventory)  How can the institution neutralize emissions from each source?  Alteration/expansion of existing programs  Implementation of new programs  What are the anticipated costs of each strategy?

Timeline (2008-2009) Fall 2008  October = 1 st Meeting o Identify major sources of emissions and opportunities for reductions  Survey of existing programs and ideas Fine-tune proposed ideas (pros/cons, challenges) Areas for expansion?  Brainstorm additional/new ideas  Action Planning o Assess feasibility of proposed ideas o ‘Guest expert’ invitations as needed o Identify challenges & resource needs

Timeline (Continued) Spring 2009  Continue Action Planning o Continue to fine-tune emissions reductions strategies o Begin implementation of ‘low lying’ fruit o Monitor progress of workgroup initiatives  Write Transportation section of Climate Action Plan based upon workgroup recommendations

‘Fine-Tuning’ & Brainstorming Session

Evaluation Criteria 1. Potential to avoid or reduce GHG emissions 2. Flexibility to achieve ongoing GHG reductions 3. Cost benefit – ROI and financial impact 4. Potential for positive or negative social and environmental side-effects 5. Relationship to other mitigation strategies and opportunity for synergies 6. Potential to be scaled upward if successful 7. Potential to involve students and faculty

Brainstorming Stations  Planning & Design  Alternative Fuels & Transportation Options  University Procurement & Travel Policies

Session Recap

 Priority initiatives?  Short-term vs. long-term goals  Resource needs/limitations

Review of Action Items Questions? Comments?
