Species Interactions

Predation When one organism eats other organism Prey: The organism that is eaten Predator: The organism that does the eating

 Predator and prey populations rely on each other; it is a cycle  Predator Prey

Competition  When two organisms compete for the same resource  Ex. Organisms Resource Lion and Hyena Dead animal/Lion kill Day Bug and Night Bug Plant

Parasitism  One organism getting nourishment from another organism  Host: Organism giving the nourishment  Parasite: Organisms taking nourishment

Parasitism continued  1. Parasite somehow attaches to the host  2. Parasite starts taking the nourishment from the host  3. Host is hurt from this relationship but is not killed

Mutualism  Two organisms living together and helping each other  Ex. Organism 1 – Ants Organism 2 – Acacia Tree The ants feed on the tree The tree gets protection from the ants

Commensalism  One organism benefits from the relationship and the other gets nothing.  Ex. Orchid & Tree
