Multiple Literacies “Reading” for the 21 st Century

What literacy used to mean--- It is bigger now---more kinds of texts and more kinds of info.

How do we know literacy has changed? _Kellner _Kellner webcomics/zot/index.htmlhttp:// webcomics/zot/index.html How do you “read” these?

Also…we “read” C O N S U M E

Why the Change?  Literacy has always been evolving…  People in social linguistics, history, cultural studies, etc., pursue equity, fairness in how we define literacy… and how it defines us. and how it defines us.

Plus…  The “Global Village”  New technologies… hypermedia, multi-media hypermedia, multi-media  Students “literate” in new ways… new ways…

What are some Multiple Literacies? Traditional Information Computer/Technology Network

And Visual Media Literacy In the United States, the term media literacy is often used interchangeably with information literacy and visual literacy, & many of their aims are inseparable.... they overlap with … computer…, and technology literacies… Kathleen Tyner

And Composition or Rhetoric? Literacy includes the creation of texts as well as the consumption of texts, not only print, but also o Facebook o Websites o Wikis o Digital photography o “Papers” with graphics o Phone messages, video games, etc.

Digital/Media Literacy 1. the use of texts, tools, technologies to access info and entertainment 2. the skills of critical thinking, analysis, evaluation According to Renee Hobbs in a Keynote speech to national librarian conference

3. the practice of message composition and creativity 4. the ability to engage in reflection and ethical thinking 5. active participation in social action through individual and collaborative efforts Literacy is an active sport!

Why across the Curriculum?  How do we come to know things? What can we believe? things? What can we believe?  Where do we need critical thinking?  How can we engage today’s students in any subject?  How can we create and share any knowledge? *What do YOU think?* *What do YOU think?*

In Conclusion-- Educators need to learn HOW, WHY, and WHAT in multiple literacies, i.e. do our homework. New materials may well mean a new approach to curriculum and pedagogy— more democratic? Lots of research needs doing, especially by teachers. Media literacy=multiple literacies.
