Math Images The Math Drexel and Swarthmore College Gene Klotz, who wants feedback and collaborators with neat math/(science & math) images and/or undergraduates

0. What is Math Images? Website containing amazing images from the web somehow related to mathematics Wiki pages of information about the images and math behind them (sometimes interactive) WHY? Help general public learn that mathematics is the science of pattern, not just numbers and formulas Help undergraduate page constructors learn and become involved in mathematics

1. Engagement with Targeted Audiences Wikipedia model for encyclopedia-like features Modified Wikipedia for construction —we aim for constructors to be primarily undergraduates, who will learn math and become involved with it by writing and correcting articles — But we’ll encourage others, such as Wikipedia and PlanetMath people, etc, to chip in —there’s an immense amount which can be done —interactions with others would also provide math learning experiences for undergraduates.

Other Targeted Audiences General Public — see amazing images, change notion of math –click to find material at different levels to learn some math College teachers — use for motivation and information in courses –have students contribute for class projects School teachers — use for motivation and information – sometimes class projects Pre-service teachers — construct pre-college material as collaborative class projects

2. Open Source Tools What we’re using and why We’re using MediaWiki software, as does Wikipedia, for obvious reasons: 1.great for encyclopedia aspects of project 2.good for user collaboration 3.used by NSDL Wiki. — Also, the software is very nice, well developed, and has some useful extensions (e.g. a discussion forum).

3. Nature of Our Collaborations user collaborations CCLI has funded groups of Swarthmore and Drexel students for next summer. institutional collaborations For future work we hope to have groups of students from many institutions—undergraduate research experiences are very popular and competitive for upperclass students. We can provide experiences for earlier students, and might reach them in time to meaningfully encourage them to math/science careers as well as learn some math.

4. Interactive Online Environments Developing the math information on image pages will be an interactive environment for those constructing the pages. Also, we are taking steps to develop interactive user material (e.g. click on image to see various overlays explaining the images, change a parameter to see how the image changes, etc.) by having computer science students involved with this as their charge (a great and constructive direction for computer game programming skills).
