SÉNÉGAL

The flag of Sénégal has three equal vertical bands of green (hoist side), yellow and red with a small green five-pointed star centered in the yellow band. The green represents Islam, progress, and hope; yellow signifies natural wealth and progress; red symbolizes sacrifice and determination; the star denotes unity and hope.

Sénégal is in Western Africa. The borders are the North Atlantic Ocean to the west with Mauritania to the north, and Guinea Bissau/Guinea to the south. The country of Mali is to the east.

In terms of area, Sénégal is slightly smaller than South Dakota.

The agricultural export products of Sénégal include peanuts, corn, rice, cotton, tomatoes, green vegetables, cattle, poultry, pigs and fish.

Links between Sénégal and France go back more than three centuries. Sénégal was France's oldest colony in Africa, and the two countries have maintained the close ties developed during the colonial period since their political independence in 1960.
