Exploration

 Why God Gold Glory  Who Spanish, French, English  When 1540 Hernando De Soto is the first Spanish Conquistador to come to Georgia.  De Soto cruel to natives  Many Natives die of diseases that they get when they come in contact with the Spanish.  Spanish set up mission churches on barrier island to convert the natives. They fail because natives do not trust the Spanish, diseases, and interference from other natives.

England  They stir up trouble in Georgia Territory because they want it.  They want a buffer colony between the Spanish in Florida and profitable South Carolina.  England hates Spain for problems caused in Europe.  They also need raw materials for their economic system called Mercantilism.  This system takes raw materials from a colony and converts them into finished goods that they sell.

Georgia Colony  James Oglethorpe is the father of Georgia.  Gets permission from George the 2 nd to establish a colony in Georgia.  Trustees will run the colony.  The purpose of the colony is Charity - give the poor a fresh start,  Economic - Supply raw materials to England, Defensive - provide a buffer between Florida and South Carolina.  There are rules - no hard liquor, no slaves, no Catholics ( Spain Catholic Nation) no lawyers, had to help with defense

 At the beginning rice, indigo and tobacco are the main crops.  Everyone got 50 acres and the tools and seed for a year.  Could not transfer property or sell it.  Tomochichi – gives permission to settle on Yamacraw Bluff (Savannah) he is a good friend.  John & Mary Musgrove serve as translators for Oglethorpe.  Oglethorpe recruits Scots Highlanders to protect southern part of the colony they settle Darien.  The Saltzburgers also are granted permission to settle at Ebenezer.

 The Spanish are still a threat until the Battle of Bloody Marsh and then they are done.  Oglethorpe gets in trouble because of his rules and his handling of the Spanish.  The Malcontents complain about no slaves alcohol and property rights.  Because of the loss of profits King George 2 nd ends trustee Georgia

Royal Colony  Georgia starts to flourish as a Royal Colony  The Three governors throw out restrictions put in place by trustees.  Number slaves increases slave codes are put in place.  Farms increase in size  Georgia makes money.  John Reynolds is the first governor and he establishes a legal system and government.  Henry Ellis the second governor increases the size of the state and keeps Creek out of French and Indian War

 James Wright last governor gains more land from the natives. He stays loyal to the King during the period leading up to the Revolutionary War. Builds roads and bridges. And keeps peace with the natives
