FEMINIST CRITICISM What is it exactly?

Sooner or later in a Literature class, we need to discuss "the F word": Feminism. I don't understand statements of this sort: I think that the media exploits women's bodies, sure, but I'm not one of those feminists! I think that the media exploits women's bodies, sure, but I'm not one of those feminists! I think it sucks that women get 71¢ on the dollar compared to men for equal work, but I'm not one of those feminists! I think the fact that "she was askin' fer it" is a viable defense in spousal abuse and rape cases in Idaho shows a touch of injustice, but I'm sure not one of those feminists! Feminist Criticism focuses on 3 components: 1. It raises consciousness about the patriarchy in which many women feel trapped. Feminist critics seek to reveal how literary texts demonstrate the repression and powerlessness of women in different periods and cultures. Feminist critics seek to reveal how literary texts demonstrate the repression and powerlessness of women in different periods and cultures.

2. Other feminist critics show how female literary characters – and by analogy real women – can overcome the sexist power structure that surround them and exercise real power in their worlds.

3. Others look to literary history and seek to rediscover and promote writing by women whose works had been far less likely than men’s to be regarded as “great” literature.
