The Moon Cycle

Lunar Cycle  It takes the moon 29.5 days to orbit once around the Earth. Read from right to left

Lunar Cycle  Although this cycle is a continuous process, there are eight distinct, traditionally recognized stages, called phases. New moon Waxing crescent First quarter Waxing gibbous Full moon Waning gibbous Last quarter Waning crescent

New Moon: 1 st Stage Characteristics– The side that is facing the Earth is not lit up by the Sun. (except during a solar eclipse). Time Line: This is the starting point of the cycle. Looks Like:

 Characteristics– A small part (less than ½) of moon is lit up at this point. The part that is lit up is slowly getting bigger.  Time Line: approximately 3.7 days to occur after the New Moon. Waxing Crescent :2nd stage Looks Like:

 Characteristics– ½ of the moon is lit up by the sun at this point. The part that is lit up is slowly getting bigger.  Time Line: This is occurs in about 7.4 days First Quarter : 3rd stage Looks Like:

 Characteristics–  The Moon appears to be more than one- half, illuminated by direct sunlight.  The part that is lit is slowly increasing.  Time Line: This is occurs in about 11.1 days. Waxing Gibbous : 4 th stage Looks Like:

Characteristics– The side of the moon that is lit up by the sun is facing the Earth. The entire moon is lit up at this point. Time Line: This is occurs in approximately 14.8 days Full Moon : 5th stage Looks Like:

 Characteristics–  The moon is not quite lit up all the way by sunlight.  The part of the moon that is lit is slowly getting smaller.  Time Line: This is occurs in about 18.5days Waning Gibbous : 6th stage Looks Like:

 Characteristics– ½ of the moon is lit up by the sun at this point. The part that is lit up is slowly decreasing.  Time Line: This is occurs in about 22.2days Last Quarter : 7th stage Looks Like:

 Characteristics– Less than ½ of the moon is lit up at this point. The part that is lit up is slowly decreasing.  Time Line: This is occurs in about 25.9 days Waning Crescent : 8th stage Looks Like:

Application: 1. Using the blank calendar, fill in the dates for the current month. Be sure to fill them in correctly. 2. Examine the pictures of the moon phases. There are 30 moon pictures that show the moons gradual changes over 29.5 days. The pictures are not in order. 3. Cut out the pictures. 4. Find new moon picture with the letter “A” and place it on the first date for this month. 5. Using your knowledge of the sequence of phases of the moon, place the rest of the moon pictures in the proper position on the calendar. 6. Glue the pictures in place once you are sure you have them in the correct order. 7. Answer the questions
