2 Waxing & Waning Why does the moon change shape during the month?  It depends on the moon’s position in relation to the sun and Earth.  As the moon orbits the Earth, we see different parts of the half that is lit by the sun.  The different shapes are called phases.  Half of the moon is always lit by the sun, but as the moon revolves around the Earth, we see different parts of the lit half of the moon.

3 Waxing & Waning Lunar Cycle:  the cycle of the moon going through all its phases in 29.5 days.  29.5 days is how long it takes the moon to revolve around the Earth once.  There are 8 main moon phases.

4 Waxing & Waning Lunar Cycle:  Waxing: the lit portion of the moon is getting larger.  Waning: the lit portion of the moon is getting smaller.
