With the passage of a train the presence of the train-conclusion- board is examined, as well as apparently recognizable irregularities, as for instance overheated axles. Due to the restructuring also checking of the passing trains at the commercial stations is decreased, and a call for action exists, since these functions must be taken over now by technical systems. Functionality of Checkpoints At the moment, several failure scenarios in the railway system have been identified: Derailed wagons, broken axles or bearings, Flat spot, reweldings and cracks on wheels Hot bearings, hot and stuck brakes Displaced cargo, open doors, silhouette violations Fire, overweight, broken pantographs Numerous sensors are available. Combining sensor data provides better and more information about the status of the train. Data can be used for rail- pricing or for positioning data of cargo, too. Design Aspects The system should follow the following aspects: The whole system is highly modularized. Sensor independent representation of data. Data is merged to a global “Train-Model” Local Positioning The local positioning of the sensor technology takes place according to the last retaining possibility before the risky element, which is placed safely with signal box effect on the assigned mandatory-signal. Implementation of Risk-matrix Therefore a team was arranged consisting of experts of the Austrian Federal Railways from different divisions, which should help in the search for the risks in a railway network. Elements were sorted into groups of “infrastructure”, “course” and “surrounding field”. Results from Risk-analysis A combined procedure to define the protection goal and to derive priorities for measures for risk reduction, is e.g. to use a monetary protection goal on an annual risk. Based on this idea, ranges in the matrix can be identified, which are over or under a protection goal. So priorities for a expansion strategy are given by sorting risky- elements over the protection goal because of their annual value. Checkpoint center stores, analyzes, validates, logs, forwards data and decides, which influencing factors have to be taken into account for optimal processing.
