Table Setting The way a table is set with tableware/ table appointments.

Place Setting The arrangement for a single diner.

7 Basic Principles in Table Setting

1. Table appointments must be placed on the table for each person. 30 inches should be allowed for each cover.

2. Tablecloth should hang 4-6 inches long on all sides of the table for informal occasions.

Tablecloth should hang 8-10 inches long on all sides of the table for formal occasions.

If a place mat is used, it should be about inches long and inches wide.

3. For formal occasions, 24 x 24 inches napkins are recommended.

For informal meals (breakfast, lunch or dinner) 17 x 17 inches napkin may be used.

Informal occasions require 12 x 12 inches napkins.

Napkins should be folded & placed nearest the left side of the fork & 1 inch from the side of the table.

For formal occasions, napkins may be placed on the service plate or on the goblet depending upon one’s taste.

4. Place the knife and spoon 1 inch from the edge of the table.

5. Plates should be set at the center of each “cover” w/c is approximately inches wide & inches long.

Salad plates should be at the left of the dinner plate away from the forks.

Place the cup and saucer at the right. The bread & butter plate should be at the top of the fork.

6. Water glass / goblet should be placed at the top of the dinner knife.

7. A centerpiece is used to add color to the table.
