 A method of writing down your ideas of a text  Traces your reading of a text and how you relate to a text What does “annotate” mean?

 Main ideas (plot, significant facts, thesis, key events, etc)  Unfamiliar vocabulary  Questions that you may have  Items in a list  Epiphany What types of information should one mark within a text?

 Any information you find important  Conflicts within  Personality traits  Symbolism  etc. What info to mark? (cont.)

 Marking notes in the margin or within the text  Writing a brief summary after a section or chapter  Using boxes, triangles, or other shapes  Using symbols (,[, *, !, ?, #) or abbreviations What are some common ways to annotate?

 Underlining or highlighting  Do not underline or highlight everything—what’s point of annotating?  Use in conjunction with another method, such as a comment.  *Use post-it notes More common ways…

* So you don’t have to go re-read everything when you are looking for important items or when you go to study. The important parts are already marked. Why should I annotate?
