Bones The Skeletal System

Functions of the skeletal system. 1. Protection 2. Support 3. Movement 4. Storage of minerals and fat 5. Where red blood cells are made

Bones have three parts. 1. Outer compact bone 2. Inner strengthening spongy bone. 3.Center bone marrow.

Joint Type examples: fixed hinge ball and socket gliding Skull Knee, elbow Shoulder, hip Wrist, ankle, neck

Ligaments-hold bones to other bones at joints Joints-where bones meet

Skeletal Injuries 1.Sprain – ligament is torn or stretched. 2.Dislocation – bone comes out of the joint. 3.Fracture – bone is broken.

Types of Bone Fractures:

Skeletal Diseases 1.Spinal curve problems Scoliosis – spine curves in a ‘S’ shape

Three main types of spinal curve problems

Skeletal Diseases 1.Spinal curve problems Scoliosis – spine curves in a ‘S’ shape 2.Arthritis – joint swell and have problems 3.Osteoporosis – bones lose minerals and become more fragile.
