One possible version: This passage mainly talks about the importance of character development of children by giving an example of an old lady who gives up the seat offered by a gentleman to her grandchild.

One possible version for task 1: The passage argues that people who lack determination leave today’s work for tomorrow and they achieve little success by showing us the example that without strong will John failed to quit smoking.

1. 把今天的事情推到明天是不明智的，因 为明天还有明天的任务（ It 作形式主语） It is unwise of us to leave today’s work for tomorrow because we will have different tasks for different days. 2. 只有那些缺乏意志和决心的人才会推迟完 成那些本该今天完成的任务（定语从句） Only those who lack strong will and determination will delay the tasks which should have been done today.

3. 只有当我们意志坚决且毫不耽误的去做 一件事情，才能取得成功。（强调句） It is only when we are determined to do something without any delay that we can achieve success.

Used to not finishing the task on time, one will get lazier and lazier. As students, facing fierce competition, we cannot afford any waste of time. By no means can we make up for the wasted time.
